Abstract

972,191. Ion sources. SIEMENS-SCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. March 8, 1961 [March 8, 1960] No. 8574/61. Heading H1D. In a Penning oscillation discharge ion source 5, at least one cathode 12 projects within the tubular anode 5 so that the electric field is mainly radial. The ion source includes a permanent magnet 1 with one polepiece 6 carrying the rod cathode 12 and a yoke 3 with a projecting boss which forms the other polepiece and has a bore 4 and an extension 18 providing the ion extraction channel. The permanent magnet 1 is insulated at 11 from the yoke and a second cathode 15 in the form of a plate and provided with a tubular inwardly projecting part 17 is carried by insulators 19 adjacent the other end of the anode. The rod cathode 12 may be square or elliptical in cross-section and the anode 5 may be a circular or square tube. A plurality of rod cathodes 12, 12<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 4, or 12<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, may be provided. Rod cathode 12 may be shorter and cathode projection 17 longer and the magnetic polepieces may have inwardly projecting bosses to produce a barrel-shaped magnetic field. Specific dimensioning ratios are given. Specification 773,689 is referred to.
