Abstract

In a mass spectrometer of the time-of-flight type with an ion separating grid system 4, the ionizing electron stream emitted from the filament 2 of the ion source is co-directional with the ion stream produced, and both streams are acted upon by an axial magnetic field produced by a coil 8 or by a permanent magnet. The magnetic field may extend beyond the box-shaped anode 3 to the region of the ion accelerating electrode 5.
