Abstract

751,815. Sewing-machines. REECE CORPORATION. June 3, 1954 [March 15, 1954], No. 16491/54. Class 112. In a sewing-machine adapted for stitching together a short end part and an underlying fabric part, means are provided for wiping the end part flat against the underlying part and holding it flat while the parts are being stitched together. The machine is adapted to secure together end tabs 7 and 12 to the folded centre portion 8 of a piping patch for a piped buttonhole, tab 7 being part of the patch and tab 12 being part of the material 2 in which the buttonhole is formed. The feet 32 of a yoke-shaped clamping-member 31 bear upon the outer portions 3, 4 of the patch while a wiping member 40, actuated by the starting mechanism prior to the operation of the stitching mechanism, moves forwardly to engage the tabs and then rearwardly and downwardly to press the latter against the portion 8, when the stitching mechanism operates to secure the tabs to portion 8 by a seam 15. Member 40 is carried by an arm 45 pivoted at 41 to the upper end of an arm 42 pivoted at 43 to the base of the machine. A leg 44, which is pivoted at 46 between ears 48 provided on arm 45, passes through an elongated slot 47 in the latter and bears against the work-table 35. The leg 44 is biased forwardly by a spring 50 and downwardly by a spring 51. The lower end 57 of arm 42 is embraced by the yoke end 55 of an arm 56 pivoted at 78 to the base of the machine, a spring-biased member 72 being pivoted at 73 to the opposite end of arm 56. The starting mechanism includes a member 70 which moves to the left when the machine is started. A finger 71, carried by member 70, then engages member 72 to pivot arm 56 against the bias of a spring 80, and thereby pivot arm 42 in the clockwise direction to carry member 40 over the tabs. Leg 44 engages an abutment 60 and is thereby moved rearwardly to allow spring 51 to pivot arm 45 downwardly for engaging member 40 with the work. Member 72 then rides over finger 71 and strikes an abutment 83 on the latter, whereby member 40 makes a short wiping movement rearwardly to the position shown in Fig. 12. Seam 15 is then sewn and the machine is stopped, when member 70 moves to the right to allow spring 80 to return arm 56 to its original position, whereby leg 44 engages an abutment 61 and moves forwardly to raise arm 45 to its original position.
