[Classes 112 and 141.] Collars are made by binding the edge of the material with a separate strip, folded to form a U-shape by a hemmer which can pull-off a short length of strip prior to turning a corner, or release the strip, to ensure a perfect binding. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the hemmer 1 is bent to U-shape and is mounted on the short arm 2 of a lever, the long arm 3 of which is turned by hand within limits defined by a slot in the throat plate 8 in which the hemmer 1 can work, to pull-off a short length of band for turning corners. The lever 3 is rotated about a bolt 4 against a spring 6 for this purpose. The machine has a main feed dog 9, and an auxiliary feed dog 10, the latter working in a slot connected to the needle apertures 12. The sewing may be done as a zig-zag stitch. The band may pass through tension pins 15. The hemmer may fold the strip as shown in Fig. 4, or as shown in Fig. 5. In the form shown in Figs. 8, 11 and 12, the hemmer consists of two parts 20, 21, the part 20 being connected to the jaw 23 sunk in the needle plate 22 and the part 21 being secured to the jaw 24 which may be turned about a pivot 23. Instead of turning the jaws may slide relatively. A helical spring 26 keeps the jaws apart to stretch the strip 31, unless clamped down by the member 30 secured to the presser foot and adjustable to allow for various thicknesses of work. In turning a corner, the presser foot is raised, lifting the member 30 and releasing the strip to ensure good binding at the corner. An edge guide 27 is provided. In the form shown in Fig. 16, the hemmer consists of the two parts 20, 21 operating in a way similar to that described with reference to Fig. 8.
