Abstract

514,988. Sewing-machines; seams. UNITED STATES BLIND STITCH MACHINE CORPORATION. Feb. 21, 1938. No. 5426. Convention date, April 2, 1937. [Class 112] A facing strip 27, Fig. 9, is attached to a garment W by securing the edges of the parts together at S, turning the facing over and folding its edge at 43 as shown, and then connecting the parts by blind stitches through a bight 42 formed in the part W at a distance from the fold 43 and through the fold; the fold is preferably raised during the sewing by forming a second bight in the part W beneath it. A chainstitch seam is preferably used, to provide an elastic connection. A curved-needle machine for producing the blind-stitch seam referred to has an oscillating work-bender R with two ribs 24, 25 separated by a concave part 26. The work is supported before stitching on a table 50, Fig. 4, carrying an adjustable plate 51 by which the fold in the facing 27 is guided, and is held against the needle-plate 10 and the feeddog by fingers 14, Fig. 5, hinged to spring- biassed members 22 pivoted to the worksupporting frame 16. The work is also engaged by spring hinged fingers 60 placed above the ribs 24, 25 and by a finger 30 which is placed between and below the fingers 60; the finger 30 guides the fold 43 of the facing in relation to the ribs of the work-bender, and is carried on a laterally adjustable mount 32, Fig. 4, so that the fold 43 may be kept low and at a distance from the bight 42 for thin work, as in Fig. 9, or may be allowed to extend further, as in Fig. 16, in the case of thick work. The workbender R is retracted during feed of the work, and is so shaped that contact with the work is then minimised; the finger 30 is formed with a sharp lower edge, bevelled on the side facing the high rib 24, also in order to reduce the resistance to feeding. The ribs 24, 25 may be formed on independent members.
