DYKEMAN, OF OHIO-AGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOIRHIO UNION SPECIAL MACHINE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS SEWING MACHINE FOR INSERTING ELASTIC'BANDS IN STITGHED ARTICLES Application filed February 10, 1930. Serial No. 427,210.
The invention relates to new and useful improvements in a sewing machine, and more particularly to a sewing machine for inserting an endless elastic band in a stitched article.
An object of the invention is to provide a sewing machine having a stitch forming mechanism and a hem folder for inturning the edge of a fabric section with means for guiding an endless elastic tape into the hem pocket which includes a guiding roller located in front of the stitching mechanism and so disposed as to prevent any lateral shifting or creeping of the elastic tape in the -.i hem folder.
A further object of the-invention is to provide a machine of the above type with a guid ing roller located in rear of the stitching mechanism, which guiding roller isprovided with a shoulder and a tapered face which insures the feeding of the tape after it is stitched to the article in a fixed line awa from the stitching mechanism.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type wherein the hem folder has an inner member over which the fabric is folded adapted to be withdrawn from the hem fold for permitting the completion of the stitching of the end- 7 less elastic tape to a circular article.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type wherein the guiding roller in front of the stitching mechanism is shiftably mounted on a horizontal rod toward and from the stitching mechanism and wherein the guidingroller in rear of the stitching mechanism is shiftably mounted on a horizontal rod so that the position of the guiding rollers may be changed for varying the tensionon the elastic tape or for circular articles of different sizes without interfering with the feed of the clas tic tape in astraight line into and through the hemmer and to the stitching mechanism.
These. and other objects will in part be obpart be hereinafter more lustration one embodiment of the invention:
Figure 1 is a view of a portion of a sewing machine having the-improvements applied thereto,,the view being taken from the end of the work arm. f
FigureQ, is a plan view of the work arm and: the'parts carried thereby.
Figure 3 i s a view from the front of the machine;
Figure 4 isa sectional view on the line 44 of Figurel. i g V Figure 5 is a, sectional view throughythe foldera N Figure 6 isa diagrammatic view showing a hem pocket with elastic tape stitched thereinr g The invention is shown applied to a sewing machine which includes a supporting standard 1 carrying a work support 2, which, as shown, is cylindrical. Also mounted on the standard l'is an overhanging arm 3 oar= rying a needle head 4 in which a needle bar 5 reciprocates. Theneedle bar is herein shown as provided'with' a needle 6. The material is held on the work support by a presser foot'l and is fed across the work support byv a feedingmechanism of the, usual character located within the cylindrical work support. Located in front of the work support is a hem folder including an outer folding member 8 and an inner folding member 9. This outer folding member 8 is adjustably fixed to a plate 10 by screws 11, 11. The plate 10 in turn is mounted on a bracket 12 secured to the cylindrical bed plate. The inner folding member 9 is attached to a rod 13 which is shifted by means of a spring 14 so as to hold said'inner folding member within the outer portion of the fabric is turned downwardly and thence inwardly forming the hem pocket. The rod -13 is moved to the left as viewed in Fig. 3 by means of a rock lever 15 mounted on the standard 1 and connected to a suitable knee shift or treadle. A spring 16 connected to the rock lever and the standard normally holds the rock lever against a stop on the standard. Located in rear of the stitching mechanism is a horizontal supporting rod 17 This rod is secured toa bracket 18 which in turn is secured to the bracket 12. The rod 17 is provided with a recess 19 in one face thereof and a slot 20 in the other face thereof which extendsthrough to the recess 19.
Mounted for shiftable movement in said recess 19 is a block 21. The block 21 is secured in shifted positions by hand screws 22, 22 which pass through the slot 20 and are threaded into the block. These hand screws are provided withshoulders which overlie the edges of the slot. Thus it is that the block is fixed in set positions. Mounted on this block is a depending member 23. On this depending member is a vertically shiftable block 24. Carried by the vertically shiftable block 24 is a roller support 25. The roller support 25 is connected to the block so that it may be adjusted horizontally while the block is adjusted vertically. Through these connections the support for the guide roller maybe adjusted toward and from the stitching mechanism. It may be adjusted horizontally or laterally of the line of feed and it maybe adjusted vertically.
Mounted on this roller support 25 is a guide roller 26. This guide, roller 26 is mounted for free' rotation on the'support and is provided witha tapered portion 27 and a cylindrical portion 28. Between the tapered portion and the cylindrical portion is a shoulder 29. This roller is so positioned that the elastic tape when passing over the guide roller will lie close to the shoulder and the shoulder together with the tapered portionwill prevent the elastic tape from creeping laterally on the guiding roller. 7
Attached to the plate 10 carrying the hem folder parts is a horizontal rod 30. Said rod is clamped to the plate by screws 31, 31 which permit the rod to be shifted-laterally of the line of feed in a horizontal plane. v This rod is provided with, a recess 32 extending along one face thereof and a slot 33 in the other face which extends through into the recess. 1 I
Mounted in this recess 32 is a shiftable block 34. Said block is held in shifted positions by hand screws 35, 35 which pass through the slot and are threaded into the block. These hand screws have shoulders overlying the side edges of the slot. Fixed to the block 34 is a vertical depending member 36. The member 36 is secured tothe block by screws 37, 37. Mounted in the depending member for vertical adjustment therein is a block 38. Said block is secured in adjusted positions by a screw 39. Attached to the block 38 is the elastic strip support 40. Said support is attached to the look by a screw 41 which permits the elastic strip support to be shifted laterally. Through these connections the elastic strip support may be raised and lowered, shifted toward and from the stitching mechanism, and shifted laterally of the line of feed both through the adjustable connection between the support and the block 38 and also the adjustable connection between the rod and the block carrying the hem folder parts. The guide for the elastic strip which is carried by the support 40 includes a roller 42 mounted on an arm 43. This arm 43 is a part of the support 40. The arm 43 extends upwardly at 43a, thence laterally at 435, and thence downwardly at 430, and it is on this depending end 430 of the arm that the guide roller 42 is mounted. The upwardly extending portion 43a of the arm is provided with spaced projecting portions 44, 44, thus forming a guiding recess for the tape.
The roller is provided'with flanges 45, 45, and the tape passes across the roller between these flanges. The roller is tapered slightly outward in a downward direction. Adj acentthe roller and between said roller and the hemmer is a guiding plate 46. This guiding plate 46 is rigidly attached to the portion 43 of the arm and the portion of the arm at the other'side. of the guiding roller 42. The plate has spaced projecting portions 47, 47.
Mounted on the cylindrical work support is a circular guiding shield 48 (see Fig. 2). The elastic tape is guided through the hem folder, underneath the presser foot, over the guide roller 26 at the rear of the presser foot, then underneath the shield or guide 48 and thence across the roller 42, after which it passes over the plate 46 and into the hemmer. V The elastic tape is an endless member. In the drawings the elastic tape is shown as stitched in a hem pocket and free from the line of stitching. The fabric is indicated at F;' the infolded portion at f. The elastic tape is indicated at E, and the line of stitching at S. This elastic tape as it leads into the hem 7 folder passes into the pocket formed by the folding of the fabric portion and it will thus be properly located in the pocket as it is stitched. lhe guide roller 42 over which the tape passes to the hem folder, as noted, is mounted for rotation about an inclined axis. The tape as it passes over this roller lies in a plane which is slightly inclined to the vertical; the tape is almost vertical. The tape as it' passes beneaththe presser foot is, of course, horizontal and the angle of the tape gradually shifts as it leads toward the hem of the guide roller in front is to prevent any lateral creeping of the tape on the guide roller. It is essential that this elastic tape shall be fed in a predetermined fixed path through the hem folder so as not to interfere with the folding of the fabric portion and so as to be properly placed in the stitched pocket. By inclining the roller there is no possible chance of the elastic tape shifting laterally at the point where it leaves the guiding roller for the hem folder. Furthermore, by mounting the roller in the manner stated, a relatively small roller may be used and the guiding devices which necessarily open to a certain extent the loop end of the elastic tape passing thereabout open said elastic tape substantially horizontally and this .greatly aids-in the guiding of a circular fabric about the guiding means.
Preferably, however, in the stitching of elastic tape in a pocket when the part which has been finished approaches the guide roller 42, the machine is stopped and the elastic tape is removed therefrom and held under tension by the finger of the operator. As the initially stitched portion approaches the hem folder, then through the treadle the inner member of the hem folder is withdrawn and and beneath the presser foot. When either guide roller is shifted toward or from the stitching point, it is shifted horizontally and this line of movement of the elastic tape is not altered. The guide roller in front of the stitching mechanism is readily capable of vertical or lateral adjustments and: may be positioned so that the tape will be guided with certainty into the hem folder and positioned in the hem pocket as desired relative to the line of stitches which is to be produced. Then again, this guide roller in front of the stitching mechanism may be shifted toward and from the stitching mechanism for varying the tension on the elastic strip or for articles of different sizes. inrear of the stitching mechanism may likewise be raised and lowered and shifted laterally to aid in the positioning of the elastic strip as desiredrelative tothe needle of the stitching mechanism. This guide roller may also be shifted toward and from the stitching point for increasing the tension on the elastic strip or for articles of different sizes.
It is thought that the operation of the machine will be obvious from the description which has been given above. The elastic tape is placed in the machine about the guide The guide :rollerrollers and beneath. the presser footf The fabric is fed into the hem folder and as the hem pocket is formed it is formed about the elastic tape.
and an elastic tape enclosed within the pocket, which elastic tape is under tension when the pocket is formed. 1 x
