Description

May '3, 1932. K. MAIER SEWING MACHINE Filed Feb. 11, 1930 I 40 showing the hem folder forming it consists of Patented May 3, 1932 UNITED. STATES PATENT, OFFICE} KARL MAIER, OF STU'ITG ART, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR TO UNION SPECIAL MASCHINEN- I FABRIK, G. M. B. H., 01 STUTTGART, GERMANY snwme mcnmn Application filed February 11, 1930, Serial No.
directing the same to the stitchin' mechanism.
and at thesame time fold a fa ric portion about the tape which is stitched to form a pocket for the tape.
A further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type wherein '20 the means which directs the elastic tape to the stitching mechanism is shiftable toward and from the stitching mechanism in a horizontal line for varying the tension on the tape without changing the direction offeed 5 of the tape to the stitching mechanism.
A. further object of the invention is to provide a machine of the above type wherein the hem folder for forming a fold in the fabric portion t engage the tape is provided with means for guiding the tape positively to the stitching mechanism and around which guiding means the fabric portion is folded.
In the drawings which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a front view of. a machine having the improvements applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is an end view of the same.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view partly in section the pocket in the fabric section and the guiding means for the elastic tape. r
, Fig.4 is a plan view of the folder shown in Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 is a view showing a folded fabric section with the elastic tape stitched in a pocket formed by the stitching mechanism.
The sewing machine used may be oflany desired type. As illustrated in the drawings, a standard 1 carrying a work 427,578, and in Germany February 20, 1929.
supporting cylinder 2. Mounted on the standard 1 is an overhanging arm 3 in which a needle bar 4 reciprocates and the needle bar carries two needles, as shown in the drawings, 5 and 6. The needle bar is .reciprocated by a needle lever 7 which is oscillated by an eccentric strap 8 cooperating with an eccentric on the main actuating shaft. The material is held; on the work support by a presser foot 9. The stitching mechanism referred to forms no part of the present invention except that it forms lines of stitching for producing a pocket for the elastic tape.
Attacheckto the cylindrical work support 2 is abracket 10 which is secured thereto by a set screw 11. Attached to the bracket 10 is a rod 12 which extends rearwardly from the bracket and also a rod 13 which extends forwardly from the bracket. As shown in the drawings, the rods 12 and 13 are made integral and are secured to the bracket by a set screw 14. Adjustably attached to the rod 13 is av sleeve 15. The sleeve is shiftablc on the rod and the outward movement of the sleeve away from the sewing machine is limited by a stop collar 16. The sleeve carries a. standard 17 on which is mounted a rod 18 which is capable of endwise adjustment in the standard and is held in a set position thereon by a set screw 18a. Pivotally mounted onthe end of the rod 18 is a roller 19.
The rod 13 is provided with a series of teeth 20. A yielding pawl 21 carried by the sleeve 15 engages these teeth and prevents the sleeve from sliding inwardly on the rod.
Mounted on the cylindrical bed 2 is a bracket 22 which is secured thereto by screws 23, 23. Fixed to the bracket is a plate 24 carrying the folding member 25 of a hem folder.
Slidably mounted beneath the bracket 22 is a bar 26 which carries at its inner end a supporting head 27. Thissupporting head 27 extends upwardly through a slot 28 in the bracket 22 and carries the inner folding member 29faround which the fabric section is folded in the hemming member 25. The bar 26 is provided with a handle 30.
Beneath the bar 26 is a guard plate 31 and screws 32, 32 pass through slots in the bar 26 and are threadedinto the bracket 22.
Thus it is that the bar 26 may be slid end- Wise through the aid of the handle 30. A spring33 carried by the head 27' bears against the under face of the bracket 22 and will frictionally hold the inner member 29 of the folder in setpositions. This inner member 29 is provided with a guiding recess 34 for the elastic tape which is indicated at E in the drawings.
The recess 34 has a tapered entrance for receiving the elastic tape and said recess at the side adjacent the stitching mechanism is dimensioned similar to the tape so as to guide the same to the stitchingmechanism with little or no lateral movement.
The fabric is indicated at F; as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the fabric is folded back upon itself as indicated at F. The bracket 22 has an edge guide 35 along which the folded back edge of the fabric portion is guided and this limits and determines the amount of infolding or hemming ofthe fabric F. The elastic tape is guided between the main portion of the fabric and this folded back portion F.
One of the needles forms a line of stitching indicated at s and the other a line of stitching indicated at 8. These lines of stitching, as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 5, are connected by a looper thread indicated at Z. Thus it is that a pocket is formed for the elastic tape and the elastic tape is free in this pocket.
In the operation of the machine the elastic tape which is endless is placed about the cylindrical work support beneath the presser foot and in the guiding recess 34 and also about the guide roller 19. The parts of the hem folder are separated to facilitate the insertion of the fabric and then they are .returned to the position shown in Fig. 3. The hem folder is located in front of the stitching point and this hem folder will inturn the edge portion of the fabric section a predetermined extent and will also direct the elastic tape so that the lines of stitching will pass on opposite sides of the elastic tape and will secure the inturned portion of the fabric section to the body thereof and cover the edge of said inturned portion. After the elastic tape is placed around the cylindrical work support and the guide roller, the collar 15 is slid outwardly on the rod 13 until it is put under proper tension. The yielding pawl 21 will hold the collar in its set position. By moving the sleeve until it contacts with the stop collar in the forming of different articles, the elastic tape will all be stretched to a uniform extent so that the articles produced are uniform in character.
Mounted on the rod 12 when it is used is a standard 36 carrying a roller 37 which is mounted on the standard in a. manner similar to the mounting of the roller 19 on the standard 17. The elastic tape may be passed directvision for the'stitching of articles wherein a greater length of elastic may be desired and at the same time the guide roller in front of the stitching mechanism is located comparatively close to the machine.
When the sleeve 15 is shifted either toward the stitching lnechanism OI'jWVtL) from the stitching mechanism the roller 19 will always remain in the same horizontal position relative to the work support. The upper face of this roller is preferably in a horizontal line passing directly over the throat plate so that the elastic tape when being stitched lies substantially in a straight horizontal line from the roller 19, to the roller 37 When the guide rollers are all set in the same horizontal position with their upper faces substantially on a level with the throat plate, the shifting of the guide rollers does not change the direction of feed of the elastic tape and the adjustment, therefore, does not, in any way, interfere with the proper guiding of the elastic tape through the hemmer and to the stitching mechanism. By shifting the rod 18 the guide roller may be moved laterally to different set positions On the end of the cylindrical work support 2 is a cover plate 38 which is secured to the work cylinder by a hinge 39. This cover plate carries a pin 40 on which is mounted for'free rotation a roller 4.1. This rolLer turns readily and aids in the passing of the material being stitched beneath the presser foot.
When the endless elastic tape is nearly enclosed within the hem pocket the folder is opened by withdrawing the inner movable member. The recess in which the ,elastic tape is guided is open at one side so that the elastic tape will readily slip out of therecess when the inner member is moved laterally so as to withdraw it from the hem fold. This enables the finishing of the circu article enclosing the elastic tape.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. The combination of a work support, a stitching mechanism, a folder located' in front of the stitch forming mechanism for inturning the edge portion of a fabric to form a hem pocket, and means for guiding an endless elastic tape through the folder and into the formed hem pocket, said means including guiding devices located in front of and in rear of the stitching mechanism over which the elastic tape may be stretched, said guiding devices being so positioned that the portion of the elastic tape passing between the lar guiding devices and over the work support lies substantially in a straight line. a
