This invention relates to a sewing ma-` chine and particularly to a device or'attaehmeut for 'f'acilitating a cording or piping operation on the sewing machine. Such a cording operation consists in sewing cord between t-he folded layers of a piece of cloth. Huch operations are now quite common with various kinds of cords in making ladies clothing.

lt is an object of this invention to provide a simple and eflicient means by which the cording operation can be quickly, easily and conveniently performed.

Ylt is a further object of the invention to provide such a device in the form of a presser foot having a channel extending longitudinally of its undersurface through which the cord, embraced by the layer of the goods, moves, said channel extending in the line of the feed of the work.

lt is also an object of the invention to provide such a device in the form of a presser foot having means by which it can be attached to the sewing machine and having a flat undersurface adapted to engage the work, which surface has extending therethrough in the line of the work feed a substantially semi-circular groove, 'said plate having an aperture therethrough for the passage of the needle.

These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully set forth in the following` description made in connection with the accompanying drawings in which like reference characters refer to the same parts throughout the different views, and in which,

Referring to the drawings, a portion of a sewing machine is shown, of which it is only necessary to consider the reciprocating needle holder 6a, the needle 6 held therein by the clamping means 7, the holder 62L moving through the sewing machine head 8, the bottom portion of which is also shown, and the usual `work table upon which thework is supported is shown as 5. The reciprocating 'presser foot' rod or holder 9 having. thereon a presser foot clamping sleeve 10 is shown held in position' by the clamping screw 11. rlhe headlportion 10a is carried by the holder" 10 and av clampii'ig sleeve 12 is threaded on the holder 10 so as to clamp down on-the slotted 'portion 14k ofthe `presser foot member 141. The portion ltthas a slotl 1111 therein. The size of the slot'14"embraeesthe stem above the head 10L and the sleeve`12 is then turned to clamp the portion lla against head 10a. rlhe plate 14 has an intermediate portion 1&1@ extending at substantially right angles to the portion 14 and to the lower portion 14d of the presser foot. The portion 14d is shaped, as shown in Fig. 2, and has a liat undersurface, said surface having extending therethrough a substantially semi-cylindrical groove 14:e formed by the plate being upwardly bent in a substantially semi-cylin drical form. The groove 14e is disposed in the line of the work feed and in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, said groove is alined with the slot 14". The portion 14d of the member 14 has an aperture lllf extending therethrough which extends into the groove 14". While this aperture may take various forms, in the embodiment of the invention illustrated, it is shown as substantially square or rectangular in shape and one edge thereof is disposed substantially at the center of groove 14e.

In operation. the cord used to form the corded material which is illustrated as 15,

is embraced by the material 16, as shown in Fig. 4:, one edge of the material being folded about the cord 15. It is desired to sew the cord 15 into the goods by a seam extending through the folds of the goods closely adjacent the side of saidv cord. The goods embracing the cord is placed, as shown in Fig. 4L and the cord and the top layer of the-goods are disposed in the groove 14e, the side of said presser foot portion 14d above the work coming down in close engagement with the work and placing the goods under some tension about the cord. As the goods is thus held, the needle 6 in its reciprocation, passes through the opening 14f lclosely adjacent the side of the cord 15 and a seam is thus made along one side of the cord and the cord is neatly and tightly sewed into the goods. The presser foot is, ot course, reciprocated 1n synchronism with the needle, as is the customary operation of.

the sewing machine.

From the above description. it is seen that applicant has provided a very simple and eicientcording attachment for a sewing machine and one which greatly facilitates the cor-ding operation. The device can be attached to all sewing machines and can quickly1 and easily be substituted for the usual presser foot thereon. The device is extremely simple and inexpensive in construction. The same has been amply demonstrated in actual practice and found to be veryY successful and efficient. It Will, of course. be understood that various changes may be made in the form. details, arrangement and proportions of the parts Without departing Jfrom the scope of the applicants invention, which, LLg'enerallj,7 stated, consists in a device capable of carryingout the objects above set forth, in the novel parts and theme78 con'lbinations of parts disclosed and defined in the appended claims.

lVhat is claimed is:

A cording or piping attachment for a sewing machine comprising a member consisting of an integral piece of thin sheet metal having one end disposed substantially in one plane and having;` converging sides and a central open ended slot adapted to embrace a presser foot carrier and be held thereon and having; its opposite end in a lower plane with converging sides. said latter end having a plane undersurface with a substantially central longitudinally extending channel pressed therein, said device having` an aperture through said latter end intersecting` said channel and slightlyv to one side thereof, said plate having a substantiallv vertical plane portion between said ends.
