[Class 112] A machine for sewing suit-cases and the like has an inclined throat-plate on the end of the work arm, with abutment means for the corner of the case, a work-retainer to press the work against the abutments, a vertically-reciprocating and laterally movable needle, and a pusher engaging the needle beneath the throat-plate to impart lateral movement to the needle to feed the work. Corner-sewing; stands.-In the embodiment shown the throat-plate 4 is removably secured to the free work-arm 1 of a sewing-machine, and has fixed to it an abutment 5 to form an angle to receive the work 6. A retainer 24, with a roller on its end, is secured in a sleeve 26, Fig. 8, adjustable along an arcuate member 27 pivoted at 28 to the top of a pillar 29, to which is attached a stay-bar 30 connected to the machine arm 1 and supporting the latter. The retainer is rocked about the pivot 28 by a lever 31 actuated by a pedal-rod 36 through an adjustable spring 35 which limits the pressure on the retainer to avoid clamping the work to the throat-plate. The arm 24 may be of bail form instead of straight, to enter the work from the side. Needle-holders; feed by needle. The needle 7, Fig. 2, is fixed to an arm 8 pivoted at 9 to a bracket 10 on the lower end of the needle-bar 11, a spring being provided to keep the needle normally in line with the needle-bar. A pusher 12 on a feed rock-shaft has a lug which projects through the needle slot in the throat-plate 4 and, when the needle has penetrated the work, pushes the needle sideways to feed the work. When the needle is retracted from the work it is brought back into line with the needle-bar by its control spring ; in case of failure of the spring, a cam is provided on the machine head to engage the arm 8 as the needle-bar rises and thus restore it to its initial position.
