In a machine for sewing leather cases, such as is described in Specification 636,728, the work is fed by the needle 18, which is mounted in a holder pivoted on the lower end of the needle-bar and is pushed laterally by a member 26 carried by a rock-shaft 28; the member 26 has a forked horizontal portion 27, with an upward projection 29 entering the slot in the throat-plate carrying a finger 31 to engage the needle, for its return movement, above the work at the opposite side to the projection 29. The throat plate 20 carries an abutment member 32 with ears 33, against which the work is pressed, on either side of the feed-member 31, this member being adjusted by a screw held in a lug on the throat-plate and being secured by screws and slots. The throat-plate is curved, to fit on an inclined surface at the end of a cylindrical work-arm of the machine, and the member 32 may have extensions lying on the throat-plate at each side of its centre line and shaped to provide a flat upper surface for straight work, a member without these extensions being substituted when curved work is to be sewn. The work-retainer is slidable in a sleeve adjustably fixed on a stand similar to that described in Specification 636,728, and is moved toward the work by a treadle operated lever, a latch being provided to hold it in engagement with the work. The end of the work-retainer may carry a roller as described in Specification 636,728, but in a modification this roller is carried on an axis perpendicular to the throat-plate 20, engaging the upper member of the work only; the ears 33 may be connected to form a continuous abutment, which may be recessed in the middle to allow the work to be bulged slightly in order that the needle may enter it as high as possible. Needle guides. The needle may be supported against the pressure of the work by a roller carried on a bracket on the throat-plate.
