Abstract
671,994. Sewing-machines. WILLCOX & GIBBS SEWING MACHINE CO., Ltd. (Willcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine Co.). Oct. 9, 1950, No. 24587/50. Class 112. Chain-stitching with eyed needles.-In a machine in which a looper is mounted on a lever suitably actuated, the looper is secured to a carrier pivoted on the lever and provided with means for moving it relatively to the lever for adjustment of the looper relatively to the needle, the carrier being normally locked in operating position on the lever. In the embodiment shown, for a multi-needle feed-off-the-arm machine, a set of loopers 37 are clamped between upstanding arms 36 of a carrier 35 which is pivoted at 34 on the lever 18 so that it can be swung out of operative position for easy threading of the loopers and the thread guide 39 also secured to the carrier; the carrier is normally held in operative position by a spring-pressed sliding latch-bolt, with a finger-piece 42, engaging an aperture 43 in a plate 44 which is clamped to the end of the looper lever 18 by a screw 52. The lever 18 is mounted on a sliding pivot at its centre, and is actuated through a crank by a pair of similar levers at right-angles to one another so that its looper-carrying end moves in an elliptical path as shown; longitudinal adjustment of the loopers is obtained by adjustment of the pivot of one of the operating levers. To permit lateral adjustment of the loopers, the latch plate 44 is mounted to slide laterally across the end of the lever 18, the aperture for the screw 52 being elongated accordingly, and it has a forked extension 54 engaging a reduced part of a screw 56 threaded into the lever 18 and thus serving to adjust the plate 44. Access to the screw 52 is obtained through an aperture in the end of the work-arm of the machine, and to the screw 56 through the usual sliding cover plate on the front side of the arm. A loop-spreader lever is actuated by a cam track 62 on the lever 18. U.S.A. Specification 1,041,652 is referred to.
