[Class 112] A thread-severing member mounted for movement with the presser-foot is depressed by a hand-lever to co-operate with a lower thread-severing element, which may be on the opposite side of the work and may be continuously actuated while the machine is running. In the form described, the latter element is a tooth on the rear end of the feed-dog, and the former member is adjustably mounted, as described in Specification 551,627, on a carrier 49 pivoted at 45 to the presser-bar 33, the pivot having vertical play, limited by an adjustable screw, in a slot in the presser-bar. The carrier 49 is depressed by a cam end on a spring-biassed hand-lever 56, pivoted on the presser-bar, and is raised with the lever 56 by a spring 66 secured to the lever. The lower end 41 of the presser-bar 33 has a shallow groove which guides the chain of thread extending from the rear of the work and also slightly relieves the pressure on the work at the point opposite the cutting edge on the feed-dog. A separate spring-pressed presser-foot 30 is carried on pins 36 sliding in guides on the presser-bar, so that the part 41 of the presser-bar can engage the thread-chain while the presser-foot 30 is still raised by the work.
