A plate 11 for use in darning, to support work 13 above the throat-plate 31 so that the feed-dogs 38 do not make contact with it, has a slot or slots 30 for the feed-dogs and is formed and arranged so that its upper surface is just above the feed-dogs in their highest position; the space available for inserting the work under the presser-foot is thus encroached upon as little as possible. In the form shown the plate 11 is dished, and is located by two pins 32, 33 engaging holes in the throat-plate or the bed of the machine, the pin 33 being movable to accommodate variations in the positioning of the holes; this pin has a large head 34 in a larger recess in the plate 11, and its shank passes through a slot cut across the base of the recess and carries a guide member 37 sliding in this slot and extending 'beyond it. Presser-feet; presser-bars, The usual presser-foot is replaced by a spring-pressed stripper-foot which is raised by the needlebar, the foot shielding the point of the needle in the raised position. In the form shown a block 14 clamped to the presserbar 8 guides a plunger 16 carrying the foot 23 which is of Z-form, the vertical limb being slit at 26, to facilitate threading of the needle, down to the needle-aperture in the lower limb 25. The plunger is pressed downwards by a spring 19, and is provided with a finger-lifting lug 21 and a lug 22 for lifting by the needle-clamp 5. The front of the foot may be turned up.
