Abstract

731,903. Sewing-machines. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. Nov. 6, 1953 [Nov. 7, 1952; May 11, 1953], No. 30690/53. Class 112. In a sewing-machine suitable for sewing together the margins of an unlasted shoe upper and a relatively thin flexible sole member or sock lining, having an eye-pointed needle, a non- feeding presser-foot and work-support, and a work-feeding clamp comprising a feed-foot and a member beneath the work to grip the work and move -with it in the direction of feed, the two feet lie one behind the other in the line of feed and the presser-foot does not extend laterally beyond the feed-foot; the work-support ends close behind the sewing-point so as to allow of the necessary tilting of a high-arched shoe. In the machines described a straight needle is used, and the presser-foot is placed in front of the feed-foot, looking in the direction of feed; the needle passes through apertures in the feed-foot (with which it moves in the direction of feed) and feed-dog, and co-operates with a shuttle in the upper end of a post-like work-support. In the form of Fig. 2, the needle-bar 16 and feed-bar 18 reciprocate in a feed-carriage 30, and the presser-bar 20 is arranged behind this in the direction of feed, the presser-foot 28 being shaped to pass round the feed-bar and needle-bar and engage the work close in front of the feed-foot 24. A feed-dog 34 moves in a slotted work-plate 36'to co-operate with the feed-foot 24. The shoe upper 6 and sock-lining 8 are aligned by an edge-gauge 46, with a convex work-engaging face, adjustably fixed to the work-support 12. The arrangement of Figs. 5 and 8 is designed to grip narrow margins of the work parts and to permit the securing of a high-arch shoe, with a platform sole 181 attached to the sock-lining 182, particularly where the upper 183 is sharply curved. The work-support is formed in two parts 132, 139 adjustably fixed to the base of the machine, the former carrying the feed-dog and the latter the shuttle; a pair of plates fixed to the part 132 enclose the sides of the two parts of the work-support, one of these plates being located at the top by a post on the part 132 to prevent accidental contact with the shuttle beak. The top of the part 132 is recessed at 178,180 to provide clearance for the operator's fingers and parts of the work, forming abrupt drops less than a quarter of an inch in front of and particularly behind the needle, and the side facing the operator drops away similarly less than an eighth of an inch from the seam line. The presser-foot 184 has a lateral projection 185 to keep the platform sole 181 clear of the needle, the edge of this sole being guided by the lower end of the presser-plate. The upper and socklining are guided by an edge-gauge 186 slidingly supported on an adjustable bracket 188 and pressed down against a stop screw 195 by a spring 190. The gauge 186 is thus able to ride over a projecting end of a binding strip which the upper may have attached to it, the gauge being bevelled at the entrance end to facilitate this; the work-support 170 may have a recess below the edge-gauge to receive the end of the binding-strip. The gauge 186 is lifted with the presser-foot by a lug 216 on the latter engaging a screw 218 on the gauge. In a modification the presser-foot is adjustable transversely of the seam line, being mounted on a vertical stud on the end of the presser-bar and located by set-screws engaging the presser-bar on either side of the pivot. Feed by dogs. The feed-dog 140 is fixed to the upper end of a feed-lever 142, Fig. 5, slidable on a pivoted block 144 under the action of a lift eccentric 150 and a rock-shaft 154 connected to a feed-bar 147 to which the lower end of the lever 142 is pivoted. Lock-stitching and shuttles. The bobbin-case of the shuttle 162, Fig. 8, is prevented from rotating by a finger 166 pivoted at 165 and actuated in time with the shuttle to allow the passage of the thread loop.
