4 Claims.
invention relates to new and useful improvements in folders for sewing machines, and more particularly to the mounting for a folder.
An folder throat object Vof the invention is to provide a mounting which may be attached to the plate of rthe sewing machine so that it may be shifted toward and from the stitching mechanism in the line of feed and yieldingly held in various set positions.
A further object of the invention is to provide a folder mounting of the above type with an adjustable stop for limiting the movement of the folder toward the needles so that said folder may be withdrawn and returned to a predetermined set position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a folder mounting of the above type wherein the folder is secured to the mounting so that it may be shifted laterally of the line of feed and secured in adjusted positions.
In the drawing which shows one embodiment of the invention:
Figure 1 is a side View of a portion of a sewing machine having the improved folder mounting carrying a folder applied thereto.
Fig.
2 is a Vsectional view through the work supporting arm in front of the folder and showing the throat plate in end view with the folder .mounting attached thereto.
Fig. Fig. 2.
Fig.
3 is a plan View of the parts shown in 4 is a side view of the folder mounting showing the folder attached and in section and the attach-ing means therefor.
Fig.
5 is a longitudinal section through the mounting plate, showing the yielding finger `for frictionally holding the mounting plate in set position.
The
invention Vis directedbroadly to a mount,-
ing for a folder 'preferably of the type which is adapted for felling. The folder includes a base portion carrying an under scroll member which guides er edge portion of the fabric.

The folder is secured to a mounting therefor so that said folder may be shifted laterally of the line of feed and secured in different set positions.
folder chine.
The mounting for the is secured to the throat plate of the ma- The edges of the mounting are turned vunderneath the `extreme `edge portions of the :throatplate while the body portion of the folder mounting is curved to conform to the throat plate.v Centrally of this body portion of the folder mounting is a yielding finger which normally presses against the upper face of the throat plate. T-he under turned portions of the mounting hold the mounting in engagement with the throat pla-te but permits it to be shifted ,endwise of the throat plate, that is in a direction parallel with the line of feed. The yielding member frictionally holds said mounting in different set positions on the throat plate. A stop -is provided for limiti-ng the movement of the mounting toward the needles, and this enables the mounting to be quickly withdrawn from in front fof the presser foot and again returned to a set position.
Referring more in detail to the drawing, the
improved folder mounting is shown as attached L Vheld Yon the throat plate by a presser foot .4,
and `is fedoif from the end of the arm by a suitable mechanism disposed within the work supporting arm. The stitching mechanism includesrneedles, one of which is indicated at 5 carriedfbya needle bar 6, and suitable cooperating stitch forming devices which are also located in the work supporting arm.
The folder consists -of a base folder vmember 7 carrying an under scroll member 8. Mounted on this base member 7 is a fabric supporting member 9. Said member is carried by a bracket 10 which is secured to the base member 7 by means of a screw 11. This fabric supporting member 9 carries an upper scroll member 12. This under scroll member 8 and the upper scroll member 12 are shaped so as to interfold the edge portions of the fabric sections, thus forming a double lap fell. The needles of the stitch forming mechanism pass through the interfolded edge portions and secure the same together. The folder is carried by a folder mounting which consists of a plate 13 curved to conform to the upper face of the throat plate 2. One edge of this plate 13 is bent underneath the edge of the throat plate 2, as indicated at 14. The other edge of the plate 13 is bent underneath the other edge of the throat plate, as indicated at 15. Thus it is that the mounting for the folder is secured to the throat plate so that it cannot be lifted therefrom, but at the same time it is free to slide endwise on the throat plate.
The folder mounting has an upwardly extending bracket portion 16, and the base portion 7 of the folder rests on the top of, this bracket 16. The base portion of the folder eX- tends Well across the folder mounting, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing. The base portion has a downwardly bent part ll which extends along the left hand end of the bracket 16, as viewed in Fig. 4. This downwardly bent part 17 is provided with a slot 18. A clamping bolt 19 passes through this slot, and is threaded into the bracket 16. This clamping bolt secures the folder to the folder mounting. By loosening the screw 19 the folder proper may be shifted laterally of the line of feed or crosswise on the folder mounting. It is held in adjusted positions by this clamping screw 19.
The folder mounting is cut through at 20 to form a yielding finger 21. This yielding finger is normally shaped so as to lie slightly out of the plane of the body portion of the folder mounting, and therefore it will press against the throat plate. The finger forms a frictional means for yieldingly holding the mounting in set position. When force is applied to the folder mounting this frictional grip of the finger on the throat plate may be overcome, and thus the folder is moved to different set positions on the throat plate or entirely removed therefrom.
Mounted on the bracket 16 is an adjustable stop member 22. Said stop member is provided with a shank portion extending into a recess running lengthwise of the bracket 16. A set screw 23 is used for securing the stop finger in its desired set position. This stop nger is adapted to engage a shoulder 24 on the throat plate. The folder when moved toward the needles will be set in a predetermined position relative to thejneedles by-reason of the stop engaging this shoulder. When it is desired to move the folder back'allY that it is necessary is to pull on the ymounting so `as to overcome the frictional grip of the yielding finger on the throat plate, and the folder'mounting with the folder thereon may be quickly withdrawn from in front of the presser foot.` This enables v'the folder to be moved 'away ,from the presser foot It is obvious that minor changes in the details of construction and the arrangement of the parts may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the appended claims.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by.,Letters Patent, is:-
1. The combination of a work supporting member, a folder having means for interfolding fabric sections, a support on which said folder is mounted, means for attaching said folder support to said work supporting member whereby said folder support maybe shifted on the work supporting member to different set positions, and a yielding nger carried by said folder support and bearing against the work supporting member for holding said folder support in any set position.
2. The combination of a Work supporting member, a folder having means for interfolding fabric sections, a support on which said folder is mounted, means for attaching said folder support to said work supporting member whereby said folder support may be shifted on the work supporting member to different set positions, a yielding friction means carried by saidfolder support and bearing on said work supporting member for holding said folder support in any set position, and means whereby the folder may be shifted laterally .on said folder support and secured in different set positions.
3. The combination of a Work supporting member,"a folder having means for interfolding fabric sections, a support on which said folder is mounted, means for attaching said folder support to said Work supporting member Whereby said folder support may be shifted on the work supporting member to different set positions, a yielding friction means carried by said folder support and bearing on said work supporting member for holding said folder support in any set position, and an adjustable stop for determining oneV of the set positions of said folder. Y
4. The combination of a Work supporting member, a folder having means for interfolding fabric sections, a support on which said folder is mounted, means for attaching said folder supportr to said Work supporting member whereby said folder support may be shifted on the work supporting member to different set positions, a yielding finger carried by said folder support and bearing against the work supporting member for holding said folder support `in any set position, means whereby the folder may be shifted laterally on said folder support and secured in different set positions, and an adjustable stop for determining one of 'the set positions of said folder support. i
