Abstract
100,663. Fairweather, W., (Singer Manufacturing Co.). March 21, 1916. Sewing-machines; folding-attachments.-A device for folding and presenting facing or button and buttonhole strips comprises a vertically movable strip guide with a rigid member adapted to be manually moved for laying a fold across the end of a facing- strip and to be automatically withdrawn when the cross-fold has been secured. The vertically movable folding and guiding member consists of two plates 31, 32, Fig. 1, with edge-folding guides 33, 34, and carries, rigidly secured thereto, the plate 35 by which the end fold is formed and which is notched as shown at 36, 3'7 to accommodate the action of the needles. This member is carried by an arm 30, Fig. 3, pivoted to a bracket secured to the head of the machine, and is normally held in the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3 by a stud carried bv an adjustable bar 41 sliding against the action of a spring 46 on a plate 28, which is secured to the bracket. In attaching a strip 38<1>, Fig. 6, the strip is led through the edge-folding guide, and the end 38 turned over the end of the plate 35, as shown in Fig. 8. The folding-device is then depressed into the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3 and, when the cross-fold is secured, returns under the action of the spring 46 to its normal strip folding and presenting position, shown in full lines. An horizontally movable strip-folding member is provided to coact with the vertically movable member when it is desired to apply strips to both sides of the work, and comprises two plates 16, 17, Fig. 1, with edge-folding guides 19, 20 and a notched delivery end 18 to accommodate the feed-dogs. This member is secured adjustably on an arm 22 pivoted at 14 to a bracket 12 on the bed-plate. The vertically movable member is held in the position shown in Fig. 1 by a spring catch 30<1>.
