Abstract

An inert gas-shielded arc welding or cutting torch has an electrode of tungsten having dispersed therein 1 to 6 per cent, preferably 2 per cent, of yttrium oxide, made by forming under pressure a mixture of powdered yttrium earth concentrate and powdered tungsten and then sintering at 2000 DEG C. by passage of current therethrough. Yttrium earth concentrate includes some oxides of the yttrium, gadolinum, ytterbium and erbium groups. The electrodes are drawn or swaged to their final dimensions and may be lightly covered with stainless steel.
