Abstract

884,998. Cutting by fusion. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. April 9, 1958 [April 15, 1957], No. 12234/57. Class 83 (4). In the constricted arc cutting of metals by a non-consumable electrode, nitrogen is used as the shielding gas. The nitrogen preferably containing less than 0.005% oxygen as an impurity. The metals cut may be aluminium, copper, bronze or stainless steel and the cutting head may be of the kind described in Specification 872,726, using a thoriated tungsten electrode and an electro-graphite nozzle insert. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 3, a copper nozzle 13 is secured to a nozzle body 13 and encloses a cooling water passage 14.
