Abstract
875,816. Non - consumable electrodes. BRITISH OXYGEN CO. Ltd. May 1, 1958 [May 6, 1957], No. 14396/57. Class 39(3). [Also in Group XXII] A non-consumable electrode, preferably of tungsten alloyed with 1% or 2% of thoriuin, comprising a rod or the like which is stepped to form an electrode tip 2 having a uniform cross-sectional area which is smaller than that of the main part of the electrode is mounted by means of a collet 3 in arc-cutting apparatus consisting of a tubular housing 4 having an orifice 7 through which gas can flow, the electrode tip extending into the orifice but spaced from the wall thereof. The tubular housing 4 may be terminated by a watercooled nozzle 5 carrying a nozzle insert 6, e.g. of electrographite, which may be internally stepped (Fig. 6, not shown). The main arc between the electrode tip 2 and a workpiece is initiated by a high frequency spark struck between the insert 6 and the tip 2. The electrode tip may be eccentric with respect to the main part of the electrode. Specifications 859,363 and 872,726 are referred to.
