Abstract

842,397. Cutting by fusion. MARSTON EXCELSIOR Ltd., CLEWS, K. J., and ROBERTS, G. B. March 19, 1958 [March 27, 1957], No. 9981/57. Class 83 (4). [Also in Group XI] In the cutting of metals by a gas-shielded constricted arc, the electrode 7 is axially movable relatively to the nozzle 32 for establishing the arc with the workpiece without damaging the nozzle. A thoriated tungsten electrode which has a small diameter flat tip is guided in a bore 6 and connected to a piston 10 biased downwardly by a spring 11 whereby the electrode projects initially through the constricted orifice 33 of the nozzle. Argon shielding gas is supplied through pipe 25. The arc is established between the electrode and workpiece by high frequency current supplied from a spark oscillator 44, Fig. 3 (not shown), and thereafter gas, which may be the argon shielding gas, is admitted through pipe 20 to raise the piston and position the electrode in its correct arc-stabilized position within the nozzle. The argon shielding gas is then supplemented by hydrogen and the high-frequency supply is stopped. Alternatively the electrode may be biased forwardly by gas pressure and retracted by a spring. The arc may be established by a touch start or a surge injector.
