Abstract
588,596. Arc-welding electrode holders. YOUNG & CO., Ltd., A. S., and YOUNG, A. S. March 1, 1945, No. 5168. [Class 39 (iii)] The holder comprises a main insulating sleeve 14 with a metallic core 11 to which a supply cable is taken through one end of the sleeve, and an intermediate insulating sleeve 17 around the forward end of the core has one end lying inside the main sleeve and is urged outwardly therefrom by a spiral spring 22. Openings 18 in the intermediate sleeve 17 are brought into register with a bore 19 in the core when the sleeve 17 is pushed against the spring so that an electrode is held in the openings by spring pressure. The spring 22 is spaced from the core and presses at the ends on the sleeve 17 and on a hollow insulating member 13 held in the sleeve 12 by a screw 15 and threaded to hold the core 11, which has a tapered end 24 to hold the cable end against a tapered surface 25 in the member 13. The intermediate sleeve 17 has a slot 21 closed at least at the inner end and engaged by a pin 20 in the core to hold the sleeve, which is readily removed when worn by removing the screw 20. An electrode of different size may be held in openings 18<1>, 19<1> in the core and sleeve. The main sleeve 12 has an asbestos base and carries a hand shield 16.
