586,940. Welding electrode holders. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 25, 1944, No. 20728. Convention date, Oct. 25, 1943. [Class 39 (iii)] In a gas-arc welding torch, gas supplied through a tube 22 is prevented from escaping from the top of the nozzle 4 by means of a valve 26, so that an electrode 2 can be used until it is only just long enough to be held by jaws 18 which are made to grip the electrode by tightening a screw 15, as described in Specification 448,231. By pressing part 28 against a spring 27, holes 29, 30 are aligned and a longer electrode can be inserted, the spring- pressed valve 26 forming a gas-tight fit about the electrode. In a modification (Fig. 4, not shown) a rotary valve member is opened and closed by rotating its operating head to adjust the hole therein relative to' the electrode passageway in the nozzle. Two nozzles are mounted on a handle to form the complete torch, the gas supply tube to one nozzle having a looped resilient portion which enables one electrode to be adjusted relative to the other.
