Abstract
816,632. Gas - shielded arc - welding electrode-holders. SATURN INDUSTRIAL GASES Ltd. Aug. 30, 1956 [Sept. 1, 1955], No. 25101/55. Class 39(3) The shielded arc welding torch has a collet and a nozzle or nozzle holder arranged to produce a non-turbulent gas flow from the mouth of the nozzle surrounding the electrode. As shown in Fig. 1 the collet has a slit contractile portion 1 and is connected by a coaxial neck 2 with a boss 3 having splines 4 on its outer coaxial surface, the whole being bored to receive a welding rod or electrode 5, e.g. of tungsten. Fig. 5 shows the collet embodied in a torch comprising a body portion 6 having a bore 7 for the passage of gas (argon) the bore opening out at its forward end to form a frusto-conical reducing member 8 for the collet. The collet is a press fit in the reducing member and is clamped therein by an outer tubular member 9 which is screwed on to the body 6 and has an inner shoulder 10 to engage the forward end of splines 4. The rear portion of rod 5 is accommodated in the bore 7. Member 9 is formed with a longitulinally slit extension 12, Fig. 5, into which a nozzle 13 is a push fit being located by a shoulder 14 within extension 12. The gas passage is as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 5, a shoulder 15 ion the member 9 forming an impingement surface. In a modification, Fig. 6, the front face of the boss 3 has an annular groove 17 and a shoulder 10 on a member 9, which also forms the nozzle, blocks the forward gas passage through the splines, the gas being directed inwardly between the splines to impinge on the inner margin 18 of the groove 17. In a further construction (Fig. 7, not shown), the boss 3 is formed with a forward coaxial extension beyond the ends of the splines 4.
