Abstract

1,114,169. Welding by fusion. TREFILERIES ET ATELIERS DE COMMERCY. 7 Feb., 1966 [9 Feb., 1965], No. 5188/66. Heading B3R. A gas-shielded arc-welding torch is cooled by compressed air passed through the torch and exiting to the atmosphere. A torch comprises a handle 1, Fig. 1A, to which is detachably connected a curved tubular body 17 carrying a tube 16 housing a wire guide 5. Shielding gas passes through the tube 16 and apertures 24 near the end of the tube 16 to a gas nozzle 15b threaded on a sleeve 15a secured on the end of the tube 16. Compressed air passes from a pipe 13 through spaces provided by flats 16a on the tube 16 to a helical passage 28 in the outer surface of the sleeve 15a which is enclosed by a sheath 29. The air exits through openings in the sheath 29 and is deflected away from the arc by a deflector 33. In a modification, the torch is adapted for a non-consumable electrode. In other modifications, the passage for compressed air passes longitudinally through the body of the sleeve 15a.
