Abstract
A homogeneous powder of refractory metal nitride, -oxide, -oxynitride or of solid solns. of these is obtd. by evaporation of the refractory metal by means of the electric arc in which the metal is used as a consumable electrode in a gas medium which may be N2, O2 or mixts. of these and an inert gas such as Ar at a press. of 2-7 atm., as required. Pref. an alternating current of 5-15 A/dm2 working surface of the electrode is used, 10-20 kV and an electrode distance of 10-15 mm. Solid solns. in powder form are obtd. by the use of electrodes of two different metals or alloy.
