Abstract
1357418 Nitrides, oxides and oxynitrides of refractory metals M N KOROTKEVICH A I VULIKH and S A KUTOLIN 1 June 1971 18347/71 Headings C1A and C1N Nitrides, oxides and oxynitrides of refractory metals, or their solid solutions, are prepared by evaporation of the metals or their alloys in the form of consumable electrodes in an electric arc in a gaseous medium comprising N 2 and/or oxygen. Preferred conditions for the arcing are a current of 5-15 A per cm.<SP>2</SP> of electrode working surface, electrode voltage 10-20 kw., distance between electrodes 10-15 mm. and working pressure of gas 2-7 atm. The gaseous medium may comprise an inert gas, e.g. argon and the two electrodes may be made of the same or different metals or alloys. Exemplified compounds are TiO 2 , TiN, ZrNb 2 O 7 (ZrO 2 .Nb 2 O 5 ), TiNbN 2 (TiNNbN); Nb 2 O 5 , Nb 4 O 5 N 2 (Nb 2 O 5 .- 2NbN) Ti 3 ON 2 and Si 3 N 4 .
