Abstract

1,065,023. Ceramic-metal seals. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. March 6, 1964 [May 8, 1963], No. 18215/63. Heading B3V. [Also in Division H1] A device comprising an envelope of high alumina content material has an aperture therein closed by means of a closure cap of niobium or a refractory alloy thereof, there being a sealing layer consisting of one or more of the metals titanium, zirconium, vanadium, hafnium interposed between the envelope surface and the closure member, the assembly having been heated under pressure in an inert atmosphere or vacuum to a temperature sufficiently high to melt the sealing layer so that it alloys with the metal closure member to bond it to the envelope. The envelope is preferably in the form of a tube 1 which is closed at both ends by niobium caps 2, 3 (although tungsten, tantalum, rhenium and molybdenum alloyed to the niobium may be used), a sealing layer in the form of multiple discs 19, 19<SP>1</SP>, 20, 20<SP>1</SP>, 21, 211 being positioned between each cap and the tube. More than one disc is preferably used so as to form a low melting alloy. In the example the layer is made up of three discs viz. zirconium 19, 19<SP>1</SP>, vanadium 20, 20<SP>1</SP> and titanium 21, 21<SP>1</SP> all being 1¢ to 2 thousandths of an inch thick. The closure caps may also be apertured and carry further members such as electrodes 4, 10 sealed therein. After the sealing operation at a temperature of 1350‹ to 1400‹ C. in a vacuum (an atmosphere of argon may be used instead) the closed sealed envelope is evacuated or filled at low pressure with sodium and a rare gas.
