A process for increasing the proportion of mean or average length fibres in a wool top sliver is characterised by the step of making a single continuous passage of the sliver through forward and rearward pairs of feed roll with the forward feed rolls driven at a speed in excess of the rearward feed rolls and with the said pairs of feed rolls subjected continuously and directly to equal fluid pressure. As shown, sliver to be treated is passed continuously through two pairs of feed rolls 26, 20 and 40, 35, the forward roll 20 being driven at a substantially greater speed than the roll 35. The pairs of rolls are carried in pairs of side frames 12 and 14, the side frames 12 being adjustable to permit alteration of the ratch distance between the pairs of rolls. Four pressure chambers (two only, 30 and 42, are shown in Fig. 3), all connected to the same fluid pressure supply, are arranged one above each of the journal boxes at the ends of the respective upper rolls 26 and 40. Each pressure chamber contains a flexible diaphragm which is connected to its appropriate journal box by a vertical rod. Thus all the four journal boxes at the ends of the upper rolls are acted upon by the same uniform pressure. A stop motion is provided that stops the machine should a slub or other obstruction in the sliver passing through, lift the upper rolls above a predetermined position.
