Drafting-apparatus comprises fibre-guiding rolls 3, 4, 5 immediately preceding drawing rolls 6, 7, 8, and a device including a batten or bar 11 which extends parallel to the axes of the rollers and is located between the two sets of rolls and which is mounted to co-operate with one of the rolls of the guiding-set or an additional and separate roller and to be adjustable as to its clearance with respect to that roll. By this arrangement, fibres which are shorter than the distance between adjacent nips a, c, of the guiding and drawing sets are retarded to prevent their being drawn forward by frictional contact with fibres in the nip c: the fibres, instead of being controlled merely in the arc a, b, are rear controlled in the increased arc a, d, the position of the point d being varied by adusting the height of the batten, while the nip distance a, c may be changed for fibres of different staple length by changing the positions of the rolls 5, 7. The rolls 5, 7 are mounted in bearings ending in members e.g. 17 resting in recesses 18, 35 in cheeks 19. Each bearing of roll 5 is held resiliently against the rolls 3, 4 by a piston-ram 21. The bar is of bent sheet-metal adjustably carried at 12 in blocks 14, 15 resting on the bearings of roll 5, the clearance of the rams 21 in the blocks being enough to allow the bar to rest on roll 4 by its own weight, aided by pressure of leaf-springs 26 adjustable at 28. Rubber pads 31 prevent the bar damaging the rubber coating of roll 7. The leaf-springs may be replaced by lugs extending upwardly from the bar, which is then made of resilient material. One roll 4 is fluted.
