Abstract
805,641. Forming sliver rolls. FRASER & SONS, Ltd., D. March 14, 1957 [March 22, 1956], No. 8951/56. Class 120(1) In a machine for winding rolls of jute, &c. sliver, of the type in which the roll is wound on a centre and is rotated by frictional contact with one or more driving rollers, at least one freely rotatable member is located adjacent to an end of the roll being wound and adapted to bear on a part only of the said roll end, the member being rotatable about an axis different from that of the roll centre. As shown, Fig. 2, a sliver roll 1, wound on an arbor 2 by driving rollers 4, 5, is supported at one side by a non-rotatable cheek plate 6 and at the other side by a freely rotatable disc 7 the axis of which is inclined to the horizontal so that a part only of the disc face bears on the roll. Disc 7 is mounted on an arm 8 pivoted on brackets 9 on the machine frame. Operation of a crank 13 acts through a linkage 12, 11 to move arm 8 towards or away from the roll. In a modification, Fig. 4, disc 7 is replaced by two cylinders 14 the axies of which are so inclined to the vertical that the lower end only of each cylinder bears on the roll. Disc 7 and cylinders 14 are rotated by the roll and prevent lateral spread of the sliver while exerting low frictional restraint on the roll.
