Abstract
545,859. Sliver-balling apparatus. TEXTILE APPLIANCES, Ltd., and STALKER, A. J. May 16, 1941, No. 6324. [Class 120 (i)] A roll-forming machine for slivers of flax, hemp or jute in which the roll is wound by a frictional drive by a pressure wheel 34, the sliver 114 entering the nip between the wheel and the surface of the roll, and wherein the wheel 34 moves away from the axis of the roll as the diameter of the roll increases, is provided with partial side plates 100 mounted for movement during the formation of the roll so that the nip between the wheel 34 and the roll is always shrouded. Each of the side plates 100 has a stud or pin 113 extending into a slot 110 in a lever 111 secured to the mounting 112 carried by pivoted arm 36 and upon which the wheel 34 rotates. In operation, the provision of the slot 110 permits the lever 111 to move for a portion of the rollforming operation without movement of the plate 100; upon the stud 113 engaging the rear end of the slot 110 further movement of the mounting 122 and lever 111 causes corresponding movement of the plate. The centres 5 for the roll are retracted and returned as described in Specifications 444,062 and 505,333.
