[Class 120 (i)] A sliver-roll forming machine has half-arbors and arbor-starting roll-confining discs, of less diameter than the finished roll, carried by arms adapted to be swung apart on completion of a roll, rotary driving discs engaging with the starting-discs at the start of roll formation, and a driving drum separate from, and non-coaxial with, the driving discs engaging the incipient roll, cheek-plates secured to the arms partially embracing the peripheries of the starting discs and covering the nip of the driving drum with the sliver roll. The roll 2 is formed on halfarbors 6 which are provided with starting discs 1 and are carried on pivoted arms 3 to which cheek-plates 4 are secured. On starting a roll, driving discs 5 and the incipient roll is driven frictionally by the driving drum 7. The cheek plates serve to position the expanding roll and together with a hanging back flap 8, guide the sliver while the arms are descending for a restart.
