Abstract
398,617. Sliver-balling apparatus. FRASER, G., FRASER, N., and FRASER, J., Westburn Foundry, Arbroath, Angus. June 21, 1932, No. 17511. [Class 120 (i).] A sliver-balling machine comprises separable arbor sections 1, Fig. 2, on which the ball is wound, pivoted arms 2 carrying the arbor sections 1 and jointly movable about a common axis parallel with the axes of the arbor sections, and non-rotatable cheek plates 6 embraced by the arms 2, Fig. 1, and which are relatively movable, the plates 6 serving to confine the sliver ball during its formation and releasing the ball on retraction of the arbor sections 1. The arbor sections 1 are extended through the arms 2 and carry friction pulleys 3 which engage friction driving pulleys 4 at the commencement of winding. The cheek plates may be mounted one on each arm, or, alternatively, one may be hinged to the machine framing at 7, Fig. 2, and be movable towards the other plate by movement of the adjacent arm, a contact 9 being adapted to engage therewith. Horns 11 on the skid plate 10 are provided to hold the completed ball steady while the arbor sections 1 are being retracted. The arms 2 are swung apart for ejection of the ball 8 by mechanism 12 as described in Specification 323,416, [Class 120 (i), Spinning, Preparation &c. for]. Specification 377,590 also is referred to.
