Class 100(1) In a machine for winding webs on to reels of the type wherein the reels are arranged end to end along a common longitudinal axis, and are peripherally supported by a plurality of rollers, one of which is driven, means are provided for applying an inward axial pressure directly to the reels, such that the reels form a rigid core during the winding operation. As shown, rolls of paper are wound on one or more reels 18 by contact with winding drums 19, 20. The cores are supported by rotatable pins 1 carried by arms 3a pivotally mounted on a fork-line link 4, the arms 3a being counterbalanced by a weight 5. The link 4 can swing about a shaft 6 and has a counterweight 7. The link 4 is displaceable axially on the shaft 6 by a screwed spindle 8 within the shaft 6 to apply axial pressure to the reels. The spindle 8 carries a nut 9 having projections 9a that engage slots 10 in the shaft 6. The spindle 8 is rotated by a crank 12 and locked in desired position by a notched wheel 16 and latch 15. The spindle 8 may be moved axially for insertion and removal of a new reel or reels by a lever 13. In a modification, Fig. 4, not shown, a pin for supporting one end of a core is carried by a sleeve slidable along an arm rotatably mounted on a shaft parallel to the axis of the core by a further sleeve. In another modification, Fig. 6, not shown, a screwed shaft carrying a core supporting pin is carried by a vertically slidable sleeve on a member mounted between rollers carried by the frame of the winding machine.
