Abstract

1471933 Web winding BLACK CLAWSON CO 14 May 1974 [21 May 1973] 21363/74 Heading B8R A continuous web winding machine comprises a pair of spaced stands 11, 21, Fig. 1, supporting respective pairs of web roll supporting arms 12, 13; 12<SP>1</SP>, 13<SP>1</SP> coupled in opposed pairs 12, 13<SP>1</SP> and 12<SP>1</SP>, 13 for independent driving in both rotary directions, the opposed pairs being driven in succession to a first station at which, e.g. arm 12, Fig. 3, is located at a core loading station and a web winding starting station and to a second station at which, e.g. arm 13 is located at a second terminal winding station, the first and second stations being respectively located in first and second quadrants, the third and fourth quadrants being used for driving the arms at a faster rate between a roll unloading state and core receiving state. In operation with the arm 12 in the position indicated in Fig. 3, a core 200 is loaded on to the arms 12, 13<SP>1</SP> and when the roll 202 supported by arms 13 (12<SP>1</SP>) is fully wound a presser roller 125, Fig. 13, is tripped into contact with the core 200 to accelerate the latter to the speed of web W, whereupon a knife 123 is actuated to sever the web and apply it to the core. Following starting the web winding in the new core 200 the fully wound roll is ejected, the arms 13, 12<SP>1</SP> moved at the fast speed through the third and fourth quadrants to the core loading position in the first quadrant, whilst the new core 200 supported by arms 12, 13<SP>1</SP> is advanced to the second quadrant and terminal winding position by driving the arms at a slow rate. The knife 123 is mounted pivotally on an arm 155, in turn pivoted on a support 167, and actuated by a piston 170 through the intermediary of linkage 176. The knife is adjustable to cut the web wound on to cores of different diameters. The cores 200 are gripped or released by mandrels 60, Fig. 4, which are axially slidable by an air motor 70 driving gears 71, 72 which are associated with a threaded spindle and nut assembly 73, 75. The assembly is connected to the spindle 60 by a collar 76.
