Abstract
493,945. Sliver balling-apparatus ; winding yarns. FRASER, G. S., and FRASER, N., and FRASER, (nÚe SCOTT), J. J., FRASER, G. S., and KYD, J. A., [Representatives of FRASER, J.]. March 17, 1937, No. 7786. [Classes 120 (i) and 120 (ii)] In a sliver-balling or a yarn or like winding machine in which the ball or package is wound by frictional contact with a driving roller, the package being wound is sustained during the winding operation by a bifurcated pivoted lever structure the arms of which embrace stationary end plates which shroud only the nip of the driving roller with the package and part of the end surfaces thereof. As shown the ball 1 is wound on a boss 4 mounted on an arbor 5 having non-rotatable trunnions 6 supported in bayonet slots 7a in a counterweighted bifurcated lever 8, the arms of which embrace the two stationary end plates 3 fixed to the machine frame and maintained parallel with one another by a bar 3b connecting the out-turned end portions 3a ; pads 8b on the arms of the lever 8 project through holes therein and slide against the outer surfaces of the extensions 3c of the plates as the ball is wound. The arbor 5 or the ball formed thereon is caused to press against the driving roller 2 by a friction band 10 wrapped about a drum 11 on the pivot 9 of the lever ; one end of the band is connected to a rod 30 guided in a lug 31 on the frame and tensioned by an adjustable spring 29 and the other end is pivoted to the upper arm 26 of a pivoted lever, the lower arm 25 of which carries a cam follower 24 engaging a cam 39 on a rock-shaft 38 which also carries a lever 22 connected by a pin- and-slot with the arm 19 of a pedal lever 13 carried on a pivot 18. When the package attains its full diameter, the counterweight 8a, contacts with an adjustable stop 34 carried by a shaft 36 and rocks the shaft to stop the machine ; the friction band 10 is then released by elevating the pedal lever 13 and the lever 8 is lowered by moving the handle 17 until the completed package contacts with an inclined plate 14 when the trunnions 6 move out of the slots 7 and the package rolls down the plate 14, The lever 8 then moves up under the action of the counterweight 8a and the band 10 is re-engaged with the drum 11 by depressing the pedal lever 13. The lever 8 carries rubber pads 37 which rub on the end faces of the boss 4 and prevent stray fibres becoming wound around the trunnions 6. When a cross-wound roll is formed a reciprocatory guide is disposed between the driving roller 2 and delivery roller 2a. According to the Provisional Specification the winding apparatus may be applied to a card when the driving roller 2 is preferably disposed below the boss 4 and extension plates may be fitted to the end plates 3 to guide the sliver when starting up and in a yarn-winding machine the end plate may be adjustable for different widths of package.
