(Cl. 19-168) control the operation of the drawing frame through a suitable stop motion device. .Each trumpet is commonly mounted on a pivoted lever which is counterweighted to apply a lifting force to the trumpet. Eac'h trumpet is held inits lower or operative running position by the tension of the sliver passing therethrough during normal operation of the machine,'but the trumpet rises to render the knock-off device operative to stop the drawing frame if a sliver breaks, runs too thin, or runs out. Such trumpet stop motion devices have been quite satisfactory when the drawing machine is employed to form slivers of cotton. However, such devices do not work as satisfactorily when forming slivers of synthetic fibers, as they frequently let singlings or thin places in the 'slivers through and, when a slu or thick place occurs, the coarseness of the synthetic fibers holds the trumpet down and permits the synthetic sliver to wrap around the drawing rolls of the drawing frame, making What is known as a lap. A lap, if kept running, will catch fire and can only be removed by stopping the drawing frame and cutting it oi the roll with a knife.
One object of the present invention is to provide a novel and improved sliver stop motion trumpet assembly which overcomes the above defects when used with synthetic fibers. v
Another object of the present invention is to provide a sliver stop motion trumpet assembly, as characterized above, wherein two trumpets are provided, one positioned above the other, with each trumpet mounted on a tongue or lever pivoted on a bracket secured to the frame ofthe machine and with each tongue or lever'arranged to operate a single knock-off lever pivotally mounted on said bracket and adapted, when actuated by either of said tongues, to operate the knock-off mechanism and stop the drawing frame.

The present invention provides a novel and improved stop motion trumpet assembly for use in drawing frames; one which is particularly eifective in preventing laps forming on the drawing rolls when such frames are employed in making slivers of synthetic fibers.
In general, the stop motion trumpet assembly comprises a knock-olfflever carrying a counterbalanced weight and pivotally connected to a support member and a pair of trumpet carryingtongues or 1evers,- each having a trumpet mounted in its outer end and with its inner end pivotally connected to the support member, said trumpet carrying levers being positioned one 'above the 3 other and with the trumpets set a predetermined distance apart and with the upper of said trumpet carrying levers engaging the outer end of said knock-01f lever to ordinarily hold it in an operative or running position, with the tension of the 'sliver passing. through the trumpets counterbalancing the counterweight on the knock-01f lever.

Referring now to the drawings, there is illustrated, in Fig. 1, one embodiment of a sliver stop motion trumpet assembly, indicated generally at 10, constructed in accordance with the present invention, and mounted on a drawing frame, indicated generally at 11, of a usual commercial type. As there shown, the trumpet assembly comprises a knock-oif stand or support 12; a knock-off lever 13 pivotally connected to the support 12 adjacent one end and carrying an adjustable counterbalance weight 14; atop tongue or lever 15 pivotally connected at one end to the support 12 and'carrying a removable trumpet 16 in its outer free end; a middle tongueorlever 17 pivotally connected at one end to the support 12 and carrying" a removable trumpet 18 in its outer free end; abottom tongue or lever 19 pivotally connected to the support 12 and carrying a coiler head knock-ofi finger or lever 20 pivotally connected to its outer end portion.
The drawing frame 11 may be of any usual commercial type. As shown, it is a single head plural delivery type and comprises a framework 21 on which a set of upper drawing rolls 22 and lower drawing rolls 23 are rotatably mounted. The slivers S are delivered from the drawing rolls 22 and 23 through the trumpets of the trumpet assembly 11 and pass between calender rolls 24 and 25' and through the usual coiler heads 26 to cans 27.
Suitable driving mechanism is provided for the drawing rolls, calender rolls and coiler heads and, as shown, this power is supplied from a driving pulley 28 through a belt 29 and tight pulley 30. A loose pulley 31 is mounted adjacent the tight pulley 30 and the belt is guided by,a shipper fork 32 on a slidable shipper rod 33.
The knockoff or support stand 12 may be of any suitable construction and is shown as comprising a fiat base member 38 adapted to be suitably secured to the framework 21 of the drawing frame, as by bolting, and carries a laterally spaced pair of upstanding lugs or ears 39, 40 having vertically spaced pins 41, 42 journaled therein and forming the pivoted axes of the knock-off lever 13 and the tongues 15, 17 and 19. The forward end of the knock-off lever 13 is pivotally mounted on the upper pin 41 with the forward end portion 43 of the lever projecting beyond the pivotal axis (see Figs. 1 and 3). The after end of the lever 13 carries the adjustable weight 14 and is adapted to activate any suitable usual means for rendering the knock-off mechanism, associated with the drawing frame operative, and may carry any suitable means for this purpose, such as a. contact screw 44 which engages a contact plate 45 when the lever is depressed and, by such engagement, completes a grounded circuit through a battery 46 and solenoid 47, by which the electrical knock-01f mechanism is rendered operative.
The tongues or levers l and 17 may be of any suitable construction. As shown, each is made of an elongated piece of metal bent into a shape and having its side edges rounded. The trumpets 16 and 18 are removably mounted in the forward end portions of the tongues and 17, respectively, and the after ends of the tongues 15 and 17 are pivotally mounted on the pins 41 and 42, respectively. The forward end portion 43 of the knock-off lever 13 projects under the after end of the tongue or lever 15 so that the downward pull exerted on the trumpet 16 therein by the slivers passing therethrough normally balances the downward pull exerted by the weight 14.
The bottom tongue or lever 19 has its after end pivotally mounted on the pin 42 and the finger 20 pivotally mounted on the forward end portion of the tongue 19 carries a pad 48 which rests on the cover 49 of the coiler 26, so that the end of the finger projects over the rotatable coiler. The projecting end 43 of the knock-off lever 13 carries an upstanding adjusting screw 50, the head of which engages the under side of the inner end of the tongue or lever 15.
The tongue or lever 15 carries an adjusting screw 51 and check nut 52 for obtaining the proper positioning of the trumpet 16 above the trumpet 18 and the tongue or lever 17 carries an adjusting screw 51 and check nut 52 for obtaining the proper positioning of the trumpet 18 above the calender rolls 24 and 25.
The weight 14 on the knock-off lever 13 is so adjusted as to barely lift the trumpet tongue 15 when there is no downward tension on the trumpet tongue. When the weight 14 is adjusted to the desired position along the arm of the lever 13, the downward pull of the sliver, acting upon the trumpet 16 in running through the trumpet properly is sufficient to hold the trumpet tongue 15 down and the knock-off lever 13 and its counterweight 14 up in running position, as shown in Fig. 1. Whenever, for any reason, the tension of the sliver fails to hold the trumpet 16 down, the tongue 15 rises, permitting the knock-off lever 13 to be lowered from its running position, thereby rendering the knock-off device operative to stop the drawing frame.
The two trumpets 16 and 18 are set a predetermined distance apart, depending upon the stock being run, preferably about two inches, and the sliver or stock between the set trumpets has a set tension or pulling capacity so that if the tension is reduced the top trumpet will rise, thereby rendering the knock-off device operative to stop the drawing frame.
Also, when in proper running position, the pivoted finger 20 of the bottom tongue 19 rests on the cover 49. If too much sliver or stock is coiled into a can or when a can is filled, the sliver presses upward against the under side of the coiler 26 until it is lifted. A very slight upward movement of the coiler 26 is sufiicient to lift the 4 finger 20 and the tongue 19, which, in turn, lifts the tongues 17 and 15, thereby rendering the knock-off device operative to stop the drawing frame.
In order to prevent the pivot pins 41, 42 from working loose, due to vibration, the top tongue 15 and the bottom tongue 19 may be fixedly mounted on these pivot pins, as by means of set screws.
The sliver stop motion trumpet assembly as described above is extremely sensitive and effective in stopping the drawing frame whenever a break or defect occurs in the sliver or stock and in preventing laps forming on the rollers.
The operation of the device is as follows:
The tender (operator) raises the top trumpet and threads it, then raises the bottom trumpet and threads it, and then lowers both trumpets to running position. With a proper sliver passing through both trumpets, the drawing frame continues in operation. However, if the sliver runs too thin, i. e., forms a singling, after the singling has passed through the top trumpet and gets to the bottom trumpet, the difference in the tension causes the top trumpet to rise up and thereby renders the knock-off device operative to stop the drawing frame. As above stated, the distance betweenthe two trumpets is approximately two inches when in normal position and the stock between the set trumpets has a set tension or pulling capacity. If a slub (thick place) forms in the sliver and catches in the top trumpet, the calender rolls will pull the remaining sliver through the bottom trumpet, reducing the tension and thereby causing the top trumpet to rise and render the knock-off device operative to stop the drawing frame.
When a can gets full of stock, the stock will push the coiler head gear up, which will cause the top of the gear to raise the finger 20 carried by the tongue 19, causing the bottom trumpet to rise and operate the knock-off device, thus stopping the drawing frame before the stock piles up on the top trumpet sufficiently high to engage the drawing rolls and form laps on them.
Also, if a foreign slub happens to blow into the stock between the trumpets, the bottom trumpet stops the foreign slub, the movement of the sliver through the bottom trumpet is stopped, reducing the tension between the two trumpets and thereby causing the top trumpet to rise and render the knock-off device operative to stop the drawing frame. The drawing rolls are not lapped up because the end did not come down or pile up between the top trumpet and the drawing rolls. In such a case, the tender (operator) only has to raise the top trumpet, remove the slub, and re-thread the bottom trumpet and start the frame back into operation.
From the foregoing, it will be apparent that there has been provided a novel and improved sliver stop motion trumpet assembly for use in drawing frames which is extremely sensitive and effective to stop the drawing frame upon the occurrence of breaks or defects in the running of the sliver; one particularly adapted for use on drawing frames, when working with slivers made of synthetic fibers, to prevent the formation of laps on the drawing rolls.
Obviously, the invention is not restricted to the particular embodiment thereof herein shown and described.
What is claimed is:
1. In a sliver stop motion for drawing frames or the like, the combination with a pivotally mounted knock-off lever carrying an adjustable weight, of a pair of trumpet carrying levers pivotally mounted one above the other, and means inter-connecting the upper trumpet carrying lever and said knock-off lever so that when the upper trumpet carrying lever is raised due to a change in the stock passing through the upper trumpet, said knock-off lever will be lowered by said weight and thereby actuate the knock-cit device to stop the drawing frame.

Apparatus as set forth in claim -1, including a third pivoted lever positioned below the lower of said pair of trumpet carrying levers, said third pivoted lever carrying a pivoted finger adapted to be engaged and raised by the coiler head of said drawing frame whenever a can is filled with stock so that said third lever will engage and raise said trumpet carrying levers and thereby stop said drawing frame.

In a sliver stop motion for a drawing frame or the like, a pivotal support, a pair of trumpet levers positioned one above the other and with each having its inner end pivotally mounted on said support and carrying a trumpet in its outer end; a knock-01f lever pivotally mounted adjacent one end on said support and having a short projecting end portion extending under and engaging the inner end portion of the upper of said trumpet levers and a long projecting end portion having a weight adjustably mounted thereon, the construction and arrangement being such that the tension of the sliver passing through the trumpets will normally counterbalance said weight so that said knock-off lever is maintained in running position and whenever the upper of said trumpet carrying levers raised due to a change in the sliver passing through the trumpets, said Weight will cause said knock-oif lever to be lowered and thereby actuate the knock-off device to stop the drawing frame.
4. Apparatus as set forth in claim 3, wherein means including an adjusting screw are provided for setting and adjusting the distance between the trumpets carried by said trumpet levers.

Apparatus as set forth in claim 4, including a third lever having its inner end pivotally mounted on said pivotal support below the mountings of said trumpet levers and carrying a finger pivotally connected thereto adjacent its outer end, said finger being adapted to normally engage the cover of the coiler of said drawing frame with the free end of the finger extending over the pe- 6. Apparatus as set forth in claim 5, wherein means including an adjusting screw are provided for setting the trumpet carried by the lower of said trumpet levers a proper distance above the calender rolls of said drawing frame.

In a sliver stop motion for a drawing frame or the like, a pivotal support, a trumpet lever having its inner end pivotally mounted on said support and having a trumpet mounted on its outer free end portion, a second trumpet associated with and positioned below said first named trumpet so that the sliver runs successively through the two trumpets; a knock-off lever mounted adjacent one end on said support and having a short projecting end portion extending under and engaging the inner end portion of said trumpet lever and a long projecting end portion having a weight adjustably mounted thereon, the construction and arrangement being such that the tension of the sliver passing through the trumpets will normally ripheral edge of the coiler, whereby said finger will be engaged and raised by the coiler when a can is filled with sliver, thereby raising said third lever and said trumpet levers to stop the drawing frame.
