Each arm 31, as clearly shown in Fig. 4, has a vertical slot 33, the top of the slot being open as at 34 to permit the entrance therein of a reduced portion 35 of a spacer bar or rod 36. The spacer bar 36, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, is bent downwardly toward the base 30, and is adjustably held in desired relative position to the base by bolts 37 which are removably positioned within the slots 33. The spacer bar has a threaded opening 38 at one end within which a screw or the like is removably positioned to form an electrical contact member 39. The arm 31 adjacent the contact member 39 is bored to receive an electrical contact pin 40 to which a lead wire 41 is secured in any desired manner,the contact pin 40 having a slot 42 therein through which a contact member 43 extends, a knurled nut or the like 44 forcing a lock block 45 inwardly within the slot 42 to adjustably lock the contact member 43 in a desired position for engagement by the contact member 39.
The power control mechanism is of a type similar to that disclosed in my co-pending application Serial No. 386,173 filed Aug. 15, 1929, and includes a power pulley 46 and an idler pulley 47 mounted on a common shaft 48, a belt shifter 49 secured to a shift rod 50,
and a fixed collar 51 on the shift rod positioned to be engaged by an operating lever 52. The operating lever 52 is pivotally mounted in the machine frame or in a fixed standard, as at 53, and is urged by a tension spring 54, also mounted on the machine frame or on the fixed standard, as at 55, to move so as to force the collar 51, the shift rod 50, and therefore the belt shifter 49, towards the idler pulley. Adjustably positioned on the operating lever 52 is a bracket member 56 which has a bifurcated end 57 within which a latch member 58 is pivotally mounted, a tension spring 59 secured to the bracket and the latch member normally swinging the latch member until a stop 60 engages the under side of the bracket to position the latch member in locking position. A vertically positioned armature casing 61 is removably secured within a bore 62 in a bracket 63 which may be part of the machine frame or may be a separate fixed element; the casing 61 is insulated from the bore by means of insulation 64, and has an armature 65 therein, the windings of the armature being secured to the casing at one end and to a contact pin 66, insulated from the casing, at the other end; the contact pin has a lead wire 67 secured thereto. Within the casing and adjacent the armature core is a gravity responsive armature plate 68, hingedly mounted on a pivot pin 69 secured in the sides of the casing, the plate having a spring leaf or the like 70 for aiding gravity in forcing the plate away from the armature core Two arms 71 hinged on pivotpins 72 at the lower end thereof, which pivot pins are mounted within the sides of the casing, have their upper ends lockingly received in aligned notches 73 of the armature plate 68. A catch member 74 is swingingly mounted on a pin 7 5 secured in the sides of the casing, and has trunnions 76 laterally extending therefrom and normally resting in notches 77 formed in the arms 71; a coil spring 78, mounted on the pivot pin 75, serves to constantly urge catch member 7 4 towards its lower, locked position.
The operation of my improved stop mechanism is as follows:
As the sliver or slivers pass through the spacer frame, and a slackening of a sliver caused by breakage, by slipping of the bobbin, by completion of the Winding of the bobbin, or for any other reason produces a thickening of the fibre and a kinking of the sliver, particularly if the fibre is of the long fibre, curly or kinky type, the pressure of the thickened sliver on the movable bar 36 swinging the bar so as to engage contacts 39 and 43. The bar 36 also swings to engage these contacts whenever a 'slub or other imperfection of larger width than the usual sliver thickness passes through the spacer frame. The contacting of members 43 and 39 completes an electric circuit through the operating lever 52, the armature casing 61, the armature 65, the catch member 74, and the latch member 58, causing the armature core to lift the armature plate and release the arms 71, thus permitting the tension of spring 54 to pull the latch member 58 out of engagement with the catch member 74, which is forced upwardly against the tension of the coil spring 78, the arms 71 swinging underneath the armature plate 68. This releasing of the latch member causes the operating lever 52 to engage the fixed collar 51 and shift the belt from the power pulley 46 to the idler pulley 47 to stop themachine. As soon as the catch and latch members are disengaged, the circuit becomes broken, and coil spring 7 8 forces catch member 74 downwardly, the trunnions 7 6 entering into the notches 77 of the side arms to again swing the arms into their initial position, the armature plate 68 now moving downwardly under the influence of gravity and of the spring 70 to lock the arms 71, thus returning the catch member to locking position.
While I have described a specific embodiment of my invention, desired changes in the arrangement and construction of the stop mechanism may obviously be made without departing from the spirit and the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. In a gill box, sliver draft rolls, a spindle carrying a sliver winding spool stop mechanism intermediate said rolls and spindle including a frame, a spacer bar movably mounted in said frame and provided with a portion movable in engagement with the traveling sliver and moved by an abnormal thickness in the sliver to stop the mechanism.
2. In a gill box, sliver draft rolls, a spindle on which the sliver is wound, stop mechanism intermediate said rolls and spindle including a frame, a spacerbar movably mounted in said frame and provided with a portion normally resting on the surface of the traveling sliver to be engaged and operated by an abnormal thickness in the sliver to close an electric circuit and stop the mechanism.
3. In a gill box, sliver draft rolls, a winding spindle, a stop mechanism intermediate said rolls and spindle a slotted spacer frame, a spacer bar extending across theframe and having its ends movably mounted in the slots therein and having a portion normally restengaged by an abnormally thickened portion in the sliver to close an electric circuit to stop the mechanism. a
4. In a gill box, sliver draft rolls, a spindle on which the sliver is wound, stop mechanism intermediate said rolls and said spindle including a frame, a feeler member having its ends supported in said frame and its intermediate portion normally resting in engagement with the surface of the sliver, contacts on said frame and on said feeler both in an electric circuit, whereby an abnormal movement of said feeler member may close said circuit to stop the machine.
