Abstract

825,484. Sliver-winding apparatus. PRINCE-SMITH & STELLS Ltd. Feb. 18, 1958 [March 29, 1957], No. 10342/57. Classes 120(1), 120(2) and 120(3) In apparatus for forming cross-wound sliver packages C on a freely rotatable spindle 16 held against a driving roller 17, when a predetermined measured length of sliver has been wound a doffing mechanism operates whereby (a) feed of sliver to the winding point is interrupted and the package and spindle are moved to a doffing position, (b) a doffing member 38 moves to doff the package, (c) spindle 16 and member 38 are returned to their initial positions and (d) feed of sliver to spindle 16 is restored. Loading mechanism. Spindle 16 is carried on a pivoted arm 20 which, during winding, is pressed towards roller 17 by an hydraulic jack 18 supplied with pressure fluid by a pump 22 via a valve 24. Measuring. When a counter 30 associated with roll 17 indicates a predetermined length of sliver, it operates switches to stop delivery of material from a gill box and also energizes a solenoid 27 controlling valve 24. Doffing. Movement of valve 24 by solenoid 27 applies hydraulic pressure to the other end of jack 18. Arm 20 is thereby rocked to lower the wound package C to a doffing position, Fig. 6, opposite a tray 31. As the jack ram 181 passes a post 32, Fig, 1, pressure fluid is admitted to a second jack 34 to cause its cylinder 341 to move to the right. Cylinder 341 is connected by a pivoted lever 35 to a slidable doffing plate 38 which is thereby also moved to the right, Fig 1, to push package C off the spindle on to tray 31. As the package leaves the spindle the sliver extending from the traverse guide 15 is engaged by a spiked wheel 39 and a spiked bar 40. At the end of its stroke, plate 38 trips a switch N to re-set counter 30 and de-energize solenoid 27 so that jack 18 is again reversed, whereby spindle 16 is pressed into contact with roller 17 and a switch R in the feed motor circuit is closed; at the same time, jack 34 is reversed so that plate 38 is returned to its initial position, closing a second switch P in the feed motor circuit whereby delivery of sliver is resumed. Simultaneously spiked wheel 39 rotates to break the sliver from the tail end BT held by bar 40, and to wrap the new end around the empty spindle.
