In feeding means which groups and condenses fibres by compression, the web is separated into a plurality of tows each of which engages in a groove of a grooved roller. As shown, tows of fibres are fed into a channel A and pass into grooves in a roller B, which engage with corresponding bands in a roller C, and between rollers E, D which are respectively corrugated and elastic-covered, to pins P of a drafting device. The roller B is driven and drives rollers C, D by contact and roller D drives roller E, pressure, preferably hydraulic, acting on the axles of rollers B, C and E. Since the rotational speed of the rollers B, C is not the same at their peripheries as at the bottom of the grooves, an effect arises which tends to stretch and parallelize the fibres. In another form, the tows are fed over the top of roller B, the roller at C is elastic-covered and the roller at D is grooved with the surface of its bands corrugated, while roller E is grooved.
