Abstract

1322296 Calendering asbestos-rubber REINZ DICHTUNGS-GmbH 16 June 1971 [29 June 1970] 28265/71 Heading B5A Asbestos-rubber gasket sheet is calendered in long lengths by means of an apparatus comprising a pair of rolls 2, 3 the lower of which is heated and the other cooled, with a steel belt 5 passing between them and over a reversing roll 9 which may also be heated. The ends of the belt are attached to take-up drums 10 and 10a, these being driven, at a linear speed corresponding to the linear speed of the calendering rolls, first in one direction so that the belt is drawn off drum 10a and taken up by drum 10, and then the reverse. When the belt and roll direction is reversed the roll 9 is moved up the slide 7 into the idle position shown in broken lines and the roll 9a is moved down into the operative position shown in broken lines; thus maintaining the delivery section of the belt in maximum contact with the heated roll 3. The asbestosrubber mixture is fed into the roll gap 1 between the upper roll 2 and the belt which is heated by its contact with roll 3 and also roll 9. Repeated reversal of the traverse of the belt through the gap is effected until the rubber sheet has cured, further mixture being supplied to the reverse side of the gap, as at 6, if necessary to obtain a uniform sheet. By appropriately dimensioning the belt, sheets of any desired length may be obtained, and a single belt may traverse a series of pairs of calender rolls to obtain very long sheets. In an alternative arrangement of the apparatus (Fig. 2, not shown) the reversing rolls 9, 9a are moved up and down by pivoted arms instead of sliding as in the Fig. 1 embodiment.
