Abstract

1,253,877. Feeding webs. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. 14 March, 1969 [14 March, 1968], No. 13673/69. Heading B8R. [Also in Divisions F2 and G1] A drive roller 9 for use in a web transport apparatus comprises separately rotatable drive segments 35, 36 disposed at opposite ends of the roller, a plurality of idler segments 46 being located between the two segments 35, 36 which are driven by a motor (not shown) through the intermediary of a drive pulley 26, a drive shaft 33 and a differential gear train 37 which is located in the hollow interior of the roller. With this arrangement one drive segment can rotate faster than the other, and the Specification explains how this enables the pulling forces on the web 8 to be equalized so that the web is transported evenly, without slewing. The roller 9, which may be the drive roller for chart paper in an electrographic recorder, is provided with a resilient outer surface 47, e.g. of a synthetic elastomer such as neoprene, and co-operates with idler rollers 29 at the marginal edges of the web 8. In a modification, the differential gear train 37 is disposed externally of the roller 9 (Fig. 3, not shown).
