Abstract

1,003,893. Doffing and drafting carded webs; forming fibre strips. CHICOPEE MANUFACTURING CORPORATION. June 1,1962 [June 1,1961], No. 21233/62. Heading DIN. A carded web which is drafted slightly as it is removed from a doffer cylinder is wrapped several times around an endless belt that is laterally displaceable and a predetermined narrow width is separated from the plurality of wrapped webs to form a sliver or ribbon. The web is taken from the doffing cylinder 12 by doffing and drafting mechanism 20 including a belt carried over an adjustable guide bar and driven at a linear speed greater than that of the doffing cylinder. From the mechanism 20, the web passes over an idler roll 46 to be deposited on the belt 50 which is looped around rolls 52, 54 in a plurality of convolutions or laps. Each of the rolls 52, 54 has a series of crowned surfaces with one crown for each lap of belt to prevent lateral movement. The embodiment illustrated has twenty laps of a belt two inches wide. The reaches of the belt on which the web is received are normal to the axes of rollers 52, 54 but the rearward reaches are guided for lateral displacement by one tape width. At each lap of the belt a further layer of the fibre web is added until, in the illustrated embodiment, twenty webs are superimposed. Between the last and adjacent laps are positioned a pair of circular shears 74, 76 arranged to separate a ribbon from the web, which ribbon is then passed between calender rolls 78, 80 and a drafting device 82 where drafts of the order of three may be applied.
