Abstract
727,651. Drafting textile fibres. ASHTON F. July 9, 1951, No. 16249/51. Class 120(2). Fibres are drafted by passing them between two pairs of rollers that are vertically and horizontally adjustable in order to engage the strand of fibres with one roller of each pair to an extent sufficient to control the twist in the strand. In one form, two pairs of drafting rollers 1, 2, 3, 4, are adjustably mounted on frames 5. The roller 2 is supported in slidable members 8, 10 and the rollers 3, 4 are mounted on a horizontal slide member 12, carried by a vertical slide member 13. A traversing bar 22 carrying guide trumpets 23 extends over the full length of the machine. Cloth covered clearer rollers 24, 25, 26, 27 engage the rollers 4, 2, 1, 3 respectively, although in a modified form a single clearer roller may contact rollers 2, 4 Preferably, all the drafting rollers are covered with a synthetic or natural non-metallic material. Instead of a large self-weighted roller 4, a smaller roller loaded by a weight or a spring may be employed. An additional and preferably small pressure roller may operate in association with the roller 3, or the roving may be introduced to the drafting system by passing over the roller 4, then between rollers 3, 4 and under roller 3.
