Fibre drafting apparatus for spinning, roving and like frames comprises two pairs of drafting rollers and retarding means intermediately located consisting of a pressure roller supported by a pair of bottom rollers each of which bears substantially the same proportion of the weight of the pressure roller. The retarding means may consist of a comparatively large pressure roller 7 provided with a cover of soft, yieldable material, such as cork, leather, natural or synthetic rubber, polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl alcohol or compounds derived from these polymers. In order to extend the area of influence of the retarding means, a small pressure roller 25 may bear upon the roller 3. A leather belt may pass around the bottom rollers 2, 3, or an apron may extend over the roller 3 and forwardly over a guide bar and then over a tension roller disposed beneath the roller 3. In the latter form, the pressure roller 25 may rest upon the apron as it passes over the guide bar. A condenser 23 may be located before the rollers 4, 9 which serve as delivery rollers, unless another pair of rollers is employed forwardly of the rollers 4, 9. Drafts of less than 2, preferably from 1À05 to 1À5 are stated to be advantageous between nip lines a, b and greater than 2, preferably from 4 to 6, between nip lines c, d.
