748,155. Transferring designs. JOYNSON, C. S. Aug. 17, 1954 [Sept. 14, 1953], No. 25348/53. Class 100 (2). A method of applying ornamental decoration to textile materials, such as linen, cotton or silk, includes applying the ornamentation to a sheet of impervious material such as greaseproof paper, in the form of a paint of which the base is a thermosetting plastic material, applying the decorated face to the textile material while the plastic material is in an uncured condition, pressing the ornamented face on to the textile material, and curing or partially curing the plastic material thus transferred by the application of heat, as by a hot smoothing iron. The iron may be applied to the reverse side of the sheet, but it is preferably applied to the reverse side of the textile material after removal of the sheet. A fixative comprising a thinner or solvent, e.g. a hydrocarbon solvent for the plastic base, may be applied to the textile material before the greaseproof paper is applied thereto. The base of the paint may be a urea-formaldehyde, or an alkyd synthetic resin made by reacting glycerol and phthalic anhydride, such as that sold under the Registered Trade Mark " Glyptal," or melamine, or epoxy synthetic resin, or a combination of one or more such resins. The paint comprises a mixture of a hydrocarbon solvent, a relatively viscous resin solution with a hardener liquid of low viscosity, and a thermosetting synthetic lacquer preferably including a urea-formalde- Hyde resin or a Glyptal or melamine resin or both, e.g. 1 part of a hydrocarbon solvent for the lacquer, 2 parts of the resin solution and hardener, 6 parts of a thermosetting synthetic lacquer, 2 parts of a thermosetting clear lacquer, and “ part of a fabric dye.
