Abstract

742,505. Automatic voltage control systems. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. June 15, 1954 [June 16, 1953], No. 16563/53. Class 38 (4). The voltage of an A.C. supply is maintained constant by a series transformer which injects a bucking or boosting voltage obtained as the amplified output of a modulator, controlled in accordance with the conductivity of a saturated diode which has its filament connected across the regulated output. The diode VC controls the current through resistor R3 from which a variable negative bias is applied via a low-pass filter to both suppressor grids of a pair of variable-mu pentodes VA, VB. Alternating current from the supply is applied in opposite phase to the two control grids and, as disclosed in Specification 742,143, an output signal is obtained across R7 which, dependent upon the magnitude of the signal from R3, can be varied from a maximum in one phase sense through zero to a maximum in the opposite phase sense with reference to the supply source. This signal is amplified and injected into the supply in a corrective sense via transformer T4. To improve stability the signal at the anode of VA is fed back to its own suppressor grid via cathode follower VD and a filter which removes components .of mains supply frequency.
