637,380. Automatic frequency control systems. SMITH, .T. B. Feb. 6, 1947, No. 3515. [Class 38 (iv)] In a system for maintaining generated electrical oscillations in a fixed phase relationship with master oscillations by a control signal, dependent on phase difference, derived from a phase discriminator, the control signal is modified by the output of. the discriminator when a frequency difference occurs to effect rapid frequency correction. Output from a frequency divider 3 supplied from an oscillator 1, e.g. a pulse generator, the frequency, and phase of which is to be controlled, is applied together with the output from a master oscillator 2, e.g. a mains supply, to a phase discriminator 4, e.g. of the type described in Specification 534,749. Output from discriminator 4, amplified by a valve 5, serves to control the frequency of oscillator 1. With only phase deviation a smoothing circuit 6, 7 serves to prevent hunting, but sluggish control which would result from this circuit upon frequency deviation is avoided by a relay 15 which is energized through a rectifier 14 from the beat frequency output of discriminator 4 to short-circuit resistance 6. Integrated feedback by a resistance-capacity network between the junction of resistance 10, 11 and the control electrode of valve 5 is referred to.
