Abstract
682,189. Automatic volume control. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Oct. 21, 1949, No. 27086/49. Class 40 (iv). [Also in Group XL (c)] In a telephone repeater system having its gain controlled by a thermistor heated by the output of an oscillator, the amplitude of which is controlled by a pilot signal, the oscillator has its output controlled by the rectified pilot and rectified negative feedback is applied to the oscillator control electrode to stabilize and linearize the control. The oscillator shown comprises a frequency-determining circuit 2, 4 coupled to the output terminals 9, 8 and to a potentiometer 10 providing the regenerative feedback. Part of the output is fed through a capacitor 16 to a voltage doubler rectifier circuit, the output of which is fed through an R.C. smoothing circuit 24, 25 or a low-pass filter and the rectified pilot input circuit 20, 21 to the control grid where it acts in opposition to the rectified pilot. The capacitor 16 feeding the voltage-doubler rectifier may alternatively be connected to a high impedance inserted between the transformer and the H.T. supply, Fig. 2 (not shown), in which case a low impedance rectifier circuit may be used.
