Abstract
658,837. Automatic frequency control systems. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL, Ltd. Oct. 8, 1948, No. 26277. Convention date, Oct. 13, 1947. [Class 38 (iv)] Relates to automatic frequency control systems of the kind in which a valve oscillator is maintained in synchronism with a standard source by a valve reactance to which a correcting voltage is applied; and consists in deriving grid-cathode bias for the reactance valve from a resistor included in the cathode lead of the oscillator. The oscillator valve 1 has the normal three-point connection to the tuned circuit 4, which is shunted by the reactance valve 13. Oscillations from the anode of the valve 1 are mixed at 23 with oscillations from a standard source 22 to provide a correcting voltage (e.g. in the manner described in Specification 577,019), which is applied to a grid of the reactance valve 13. A condenser-shunted resistor 19 included in the earth connection of the oscillator valve 1 is also included in the earth connection of the reactance valve cathode, and thus affords grid to cathode bias for this valve. The grid leak 20 of the valve 13 is earthed, and the grid leak 7 of the valve 1 is preferably connected to its cathode. When the supply voltage drifts, two effects are produced on the reactance valve, the change in oscillatory frequency causing a change of the correcting- voltage applied to its grid, and the change in direct current through the resistor 19 causing a change in its cathode voltage. These two effects are arranged to oppose each other, by suitable choice of the polarity of the quadrature voltage applied to the reactance valve grid. In the example shown, this is affected by coupling the anode of the valve 13 to one end of the tuned circuit 4, and by coupling the grid of the valve 13 to the opposite end of the tuned circuit 4 through a quadrature network 24, 25. As a further frequency control, a saturable-core inductance 26 may be connected across part of the tuned circuit 4, and its inductance value varied by a coil 27 in the D.C. supply to the reactance valve.
